James Stickney of Tallapoosa Georgia, 15 in Indianapolis waiting remittance from his father to return home. He faced peace proceedings after trouble in Indianapolis last October, where he was jailed for carrying concealed weapons. The weapon was bought to Will himself after he found that Miss Emma Cole grew coal. Stickney, a printer, had advertised for a lady correspondent. Emma Cole answered and their friendship became a romance. After a proposal and Stickney leaving his job in Georgia, Miss Cole said she could not marry him, leaving him despairing and unclear about his actions.
Francis J Meeker of the Newark Firemen s Relief Association is detained at police headquarters charged by Assistant Fire Chief William C Astley with embezzlement. The sworn charge before Judge Lambert lists six thousand dollars, with defalcation potentially reaching eleven thousand dollars. Meeker has served as treasurer for over twenty years.
Fire at United Stock Company stock yards in South Omaha destroys about 22 sheep and 500 head of sheep valued around $5,000. Cause believed to be a lighted cigar stub dropped by a worker. Authorities report no human injuries.

Jackson Miss December 5 Special The most unique petition ever received by a governor of Mississippi has reached Governor Longino s desk and will be submitted for consideration at the next meeting of the penitentiary board of control During the consideration of the Dr Backstrom sensation at the last meeting Captain L T Blount attorney for Backstrom charged that a convict named McDonald on the Sunflower farm was the proprietor of a flourishing blind tiger and that he had been engaged in a poker game with the Sunflower county grand jury during their visit to the farm Just prior to the bringing of the indictment against Dr Backstrom charging him with being responsible for the death of a convict named John Oliver McDonald now sends a petition to the governor demanding an investigation of his conduct as a prisoner and denying that he has ever committed an infraction of the prison rules The petition is accompanied by a certificate signed by a large number of Sunflower county citizens McDonald declares that he has never played poker with any grand jury and is highly indignant over the charge.
A midnight blaze destroyed Marlboro city hall including city offices armory and public library. Loss estimated at 500 000 with no contents saved from departments. The library held about 25 000 volumes and priceless documents.

In Hot Springs Arkansas on December 25 Chief of Detectives Jack Donahue was shot dead while attempting to arrest Frank Dougherty, a race track follower who had struck a woman with an ax. Dougherty was wounded by a 16 year old bystander and fatally shot himself after being shot in the face and breast. The suspect died soon after. crowd talk of lynching dispersed.
Report aboard the steamer Moana details an ambush by natives of Mallicelo in the New Hebrides that killed Captain Henry Atkinson and wounded two crewmen of the Lily. The attack arose from burial superstitions amid native workers returning from New Caledonia. The Pearl was later fired upon at Eapigie Bay with several natives wounded.
A pretrial legal fight is promised in the Lawrence murder case at Ellisville next week. Dr J J Harper R M MecCormick Burt Johnstone and the negro Albert McGhee face habeas corpus hearing December 30 with a special term of court ordered for January. About sixty witnesses are expected and testimony promises to be sensational. The crime occurred at the logging camps of Eastman Gardner Co near Laurel.
Duluth report states George Plydell aged 65 died from exposure after collapsing within three feet of his home while carrying Christmas gifts. He lived alone in a harbor front shack where he ran a small confectionery and clear store as temperatures plunged to twenty below zero for a full day.
Battle Creek Michigan December 25 In a head on engine collision at Benton six miles north of the city two engineers were killed and two firemen fatally hurt from Grand Trunk trains Nos 1122 and 911. The No 1122 engine was an extra sent to meet 911 aiding a heavy freight.
Montgomery Godley a colored man was seized from Pittsburg jail by a mob and hanged after a brief hearing. He allegedly murdered Policeman Milton Hinkle at a Christmas dance. The mob beat, cut his throat, and hanged him to a telephone pole despite pleas for mercy. Police and guards stood by as the mob acted.
Fire in Brooklyn leveled the Arbuckle Bros sugar refinery cooperage. One wall collapsed burying a fireman, Michael O'Toole died, Battalion Chief Thomas Coppinger and Thomas McCarthy were seriously injured. Fire under control by 1 a.m. No loss estimate released. Northwestern to build new athletic field in Evanston, site near Heart of Evanston to replace Sheppard Field before next season.
William P Hollenback shot his wife three times as she lay in bed and then shot and killed himself after forcing his 17 year old step daughter from the home. He had planned reconciliation amid a pending police court case for mistreatment. The wife was seriously wounded.
In St Louis a cab and carriage drivers strike over wage increases extended to 290 out of 390 drivers. Seventeen stables joined the dispute and only one liverymen’s firm kept its agreement. Funerals and social events were disrupted as owners drove hearses due to driver shortages. Many livery men would pay the wage scale but refuse to recognize the union.
