Insurance. Buckets and brigades guard small town fire risks
Jackson December 16 Special The alarmingly high rate of fires in small towns in Mississippi has driven many fire insurance companies to stop writing general business there. Only about ten companies will insure small towns now, with many restricting coverage to detached dwellings or brick structures. Volunteers with buckets remain the sole protection in very many communities, and industry experts expect 90 percent of firms to show losses on small town insurance. Rate-cutting has surged, especially in larger towns with multiple underwriters.
