Early Morning Court Run for Solicitor Hill
The court scene opened with Judge Roan ordering figures in the McLean forgery trial to return at 6 30 AM. Solicitor Charles D Hill arrived in haste in disheveled state, trousers on but coat and tie awry, and proceeded to address the jury. The judge recalled a jailbird joke about a lawyer fleeing after bad advice, and the jury soon found McLean guilty of a misdemeanor. Bond was set at 1000 dollars for a new-trial motion by John McClellan, but the prosecutor remained unaffected as the case concluded swiftly after Hill’s dash.
