President John Skelton Williams of the Seaboard Air Line, with Vice President J M Barr and Director James A Blair, arrived in Atlanta at 9 30 PM aboard Williams private car from the Western and Atlantic. The party will tour the system’s lines, including the Atlanta Birmingham extension, and meet bankers and officials before departing to Washington and New York.
Levi Perham, 19, testified that Mrs. Mary H. Rogers plotted to kill her husband for a $500 life policy to fund a home for the man she loved. He described luring Marcua M. Rogers to a river bank, tying him with rope, and chloroform. Mrs. Rogers penned a note signed with her husband’s name and pinned it to his hat before the drowning. Perham then helped dispose of the bodies and returned home with Mrs. Rogers.
A Pan Handle eastbound flyer No 14 wrecked at New Cumberland Junction Steubenville after an open switch caused it to jump to the westbound track. The front mall car telescoped the smoker baggage car. both engines wrecked. Frank L Lasalle oil stock salesman died at Steubenville hospital and others were injured.
Frank Brotia a 19 year old youth from Youngstown Ohio attempted to rob the First National Bank Hoboken. He leaped into the Hudson river but was lassoed by a mast and hauled ashore after a cashier and bystanders pursued him. The check for 315 was stopped and the bandit fought to seize cash at the window before being captured.
Washington December 10 The second annual convention of the Independent Manufacturers association is in Washington with President John Longstreet of Richmond presiding. The day’s business centered on a bill aiding redemption of tobacco rags, wrappings, and bonds by manufacturers. The measure, once passed by the House last year with broad support, lagged in the Senate. today opposition appeared. A faction of about six manufacturers began to leave, citing a lack of interest in majority votes but returned after promises of compromise.
Boston hosts the Merchants Association annual banquet where national figures discuss the negro question and reciprocity. Senator Daniel argues the union remains intact except for color issues, while Governor Cummins advocates reciprocity with Canada. Hamlin reads the governor’s address as illness forces Cummins to depart.
Washington December 10 President Roosevelt received calls today from several members of the republican committee who are in the city to attend the meeting of the committee set to begin at Arlington tomorrow. Among them were New of Indiana Clarke of Louisiana Coombs of Florida McKenzie of North Dakota Clayton of Arkansas and Stewart of Illinois. They wished especially to pay their respect to the president though Mr New had an extended chat with him. This afternoon the Chicago delegation in the city to present to the national committee the claims of that city on the national convention was received by the president at the White House. Washington December 10 The house adopted a resolution to investigate United States District Judge Charles Swayne of Florida for high crimes and misdemeanors amid a partisan debate. Judge Lamar led the push, with strong support from many Democrats and some Republicans, while others urged specific charges and caution.
London December 10. In half an hour's heating in the divorce court today Countess Mabel Russell was granted a decree nisi against her husband William Brown a former coachman. She sued for divorce on grounds of cruelty and misconduct. Brown married her in December 1902 under the title of Prince Aphrobald Stuart De Modena, alleging he was a Havarian nobleman.
Wilmington December 10 Special The coasting schooner Clarence H sailing between Shallotte NC and Wilmington capsized in a gale off the coast last night. All aboard were drowned including Captain L H Hewett master L Morrison Carson Jim Richardson and Captains William and James Lewis. Wreck lies bottom up on the beach. A small sailing vessel arrived in port and reported the news to the captain who found the disaster. The Clarence H had set out from Shallotte yesterday into a storm with strong winds.
A United States grand jury report in a Nebraska bribery case indicts former State Senator Ellott Lowe for conspiring to influence postmaster appointments at Alma. Indictments target ranchmen in illegal fencing and other minor Indian cases. Billings testified that payments totaling $460 influenced Dietrich’s postmaster recommendation. Mitchell later appointed. A fraternal order member warned Grand Jury foreman Francis White that his life could be in danger, prompting questioning at the federal marshal’s office.
In Jacksonville on December 10 the trial of J. E. Starke for murdering John F. Angel brought the admission and reading of a love letter from T. Borden to Mrs. Starke. Mrs. Starke refused to answer whether she received the letter, invoking self incrimination. The case, involving Angel defending his sister, is expected to span several more days.
Christiana December 10 The Norwegian parliament awarded the annual Nobel prize to Wm R Cremer MP publisher of the Arbitrator of London for his work on international arbitration The physics prize is shared by Henri Becquerel and M Mme Curie The chemistry prize goes to Arrhenius the medical prize to Dr Flazen and the literature prize to Bjornsterne Bjornson The prizes total about 40000 dollars each
Montgomery, Ala December 10 Special Joseph Moses a white child three years old was burned almost to death today likely while playing with fire his clothes caught. The front of his body is burned from head to foot and the back partly burned his face lips eyes and nostrils are charred flesh and he lies at the point of death suffering untold agony
Monterey reports cold weather ends yellow fever scare after two weeks with no new cases. Board of health officially declares the city area safe from yellow fever, noting no new infections and continuing vigilance as conditions persist.
