Senators Hear Claims on Immigrant Lunacy and Costs
The Senate immigration committee heard proposals to regulate alien entry amid claims that thousands of insane foreigners enter the United States yearly. New York officials estimated 200 inmates in state hospitals with 700 more yearly, half foreign born, urging deportation measures and a two year presumption of public charge. A US head tax was urged to deter undesirable immigrants, with tighter controls on diseased entrants and liquor sales at immigrant stations.
