Rome Ga December 7 Special A clever swindler posing as a government employee tours Rome selling wall mail boxes to be placed at gates claiming a regulation requires every house to have a letter box. He claims post office authority and collects about 60 cents. Postmaster T J Helm warns he has no authority and urges catching and prosecuting him to halt further frauds.
Mr Bryan mocks Mr Cleveland before a speech that failed to win a Republican congressional district in New Jersey for democracy. He forgets his own Colorado speeches where he faced similar trouble making Democratic gains.
Charles Healy long prominent in Atlanta business and social circles showed some improvement after a partial stroke last Saturday. He remains in critical condition at R B Toy's home 105 Forrest Avenue under careful medical care and nursing by relatives.
Colonel John B. Goodwin grand sire of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows visits Cincinnati. He will be entertained at a banquet. In Rome Georgia December 7 special report says Charley Lumpkin was shot and beaten with a pistol by Bill Evans while in a buggy with Mathis. Near two and a half miles from town a dispute over Evans arrest led to Evans drawing a pistol and firing at Lumpkin in the head. The wounded man was beaten as he fell. both men had been drinking.
Mayor-elect Howell declares the city cannot pay December bills from 1903 appropriations under current law. Departments including Grady Hospital, Sanitary, and Public Works report funding shortages and may halt operations. The ordinance bars paying next year’s bills with this year’s funds, unless law is repealed, prompting potential vetoes and delayed settlements into January.
