Root condemns boss system and urges short ballot reform
Albany August 30. On the floor of the New York constitutional convention Elihu Root denounced the boss system and invisible government. He urged the people be given a short ballot and departmental reorganization to end forty years of domination by party leaders. He argued the system erodes democracy and proposes consolidating 168 departments under 15 heads with only two elective officials. The short ballot plan, favored by reformers, faced opposition from old guard members. The convention explored moving to state department heads appointed by the governor with Senate advice and consent.

Southeastern Fair Plans Announced at Lakewood Show
Final details for the Southeastern Fair to be held at Lakewood November 16 to 18 were announced by RM Steiptin general manager. The event aims to be the souths largest for cattle and corn exhibits featuring Hereford cattle corn club boys stock sales and a Southern Ruralist show with premiums totaling 9000 for cattle and corn prizes plus over 1000 for farm products.
