Distressing scenes mark the departure of wounded Mayor Caynor from the hospital as he returns home, with onlookers noting his trembling gait and frail condition. Officials assure reporters his condition remains serious but stable.
New York August 28 Mayor Gaynor was discharged from St Mary’s hospital this morning and traveled to Deep Walls on Long Island by steamer. Though weak he attempted to walk unaided, sinking to his knees and stumbling up stairs before resting on a veranda chair. Fifty orphan children gathered in the hospital courtyard for a final salute as he left.
Dominant issue in twenty years in South Carolina politics returns as Democratic primaries approach. Statewide prohibition splits with local option in thirty seven counties under a dispensary system. Gov race features six candidates split on prohibition lines, with a second primary to decide the nominating winner. Continued on Page Three.

He cites unworthiness yet notes strides under ancestors and long-standing evils that hinder reforms. New York August 28 Customs officials plan to summon Mrs I Reynolds Adriance of Poughkeepsie N Y to answer why she should not be arrested for smuggling A $6000 pearl necklace was found hidden in her hat during a search after arrival on the steamer Balboa She paid $280 in duty but officials say her daughter Helen helped reveal the forgone pearl illness and the mother admitted the purses were Swiss bought The incident followed an initial claim of no pearls and ended with agreement to pay duty amidst a charged scene aboard the ship.
Cheyenne Wy August 28 Theodora Roosevelt rode 30 miles on wiry cow ponies across Wyoming to mingle with cowboys. He visited Senator Warren's sheep ranch then returned to Cheyenne and attended church with U S district attorney Timothy Burke. He later rode again, praising the West as party petitions begin for New Jersey senate ballots with Murphy Stokes Bowiex Baird Martine among candidates.
Two Black men died and four were wounded in a dance hall fight near Baggio, Arkansas, after an altercation between Mack Harvey and his wife led to gunfire. John Russell, a white man, aided by deputies, helped quell the melee as more than fifty shots were exchanged. Police arrested several Black suspects as tension rose over the deadly clash.
Insurance man H M Stone, 49, was charged with disorderly conduct after a phone attempt to discuss politics at a cigar store on Decatur Street. Call Officer Brannan reported a hostile rebuttal and Brannan identified Stone as the user. Police found a double barreled derringer on Stone, who was released on $25.75 cash collateral.
Councilman Steve Johnston announces he will not seek another mayoral term, opting to finish his current council term through January 1, 1812. He endorses Maddox for the job, praising his record and urging continued progress for Atlanta.
Unofficial analysis of urban returns from the thirteenth census shows Atlanta lagging in growth compared with cities over 60,000. Among cities with 200k to 400k population, nine recorded an average growth of about 38 percent, while the big four lagged behind earlier decade gains.
John M. McGarrah 36, vice president and general manager of Palmer Brick Company, died suddenly of apoplexy at his home 109 West Baker Street at 10 am while talking with family. Former Americus, Ga, man, head office executive for Kentucky Refining, recently with Palmer Brick. Survived by wife, one child, two sisters, and a brother. Body to be sent to Lumpkin, Georgia for funeral and interment.
Forecasts cover states from Georgia to West Virginia with showers in the southeast. Virginia shows showers Tuesday, partly cloudy Monday, winds light to moderate northeast to east. East Texas fair, New Mexico fair in the north with a thunder shower risk Monday. Oklahoma Arkansas Tennessee Kentucky West state show variable winds and warm conditions.
New York August 24 The Republican Congressional Committee released President Tafts letter to William B McKinley chairman of the Republican committee outlining reasons to vote Republican in coming elections The letter argues for a Republican majority to carry out its 1908 platform and protect tariffs It cites past legislative progress and warns that a Democratic majority could reverse gains and hinder protectionist policy The president emphasizes party unity loyalty to candidates and the aim of restoring continuation of GOP tenure in Congress The document frames the election as a choice between Republican control and Democratic vetoes and reform efforts
