The City of Trenton boiler explosion near Torresdale causes eleven deaths and over twenty injuries. Fire and wreckage followed as passengers leaped into shallow water and rescuers from river clubs aided the stricken crowds while captains and crew acted heroically before grounding in the marshes.
The Division of Insular Affairs reports no yellow fever cases in June in Cuba and credits mosquito-focused disinfection for reducing transmission. It notes past years with little fever, but none with complete disappearance as at present, and references March 6 clearance and a new focus by April 20.

Mia Zina Young, widow of Joseph Smith and later Brigham Young, died in Salt Lake City at age 80. Born in Watertown New York in 1811, she was a pioneer in the Mormon movement and married Smith at Nauvoo before becoming Young's wife after his death. Four surviving widows of Brigham Young remain.
London August 28 official engagement announced Helen daughter of former Governor Levi P Morton New York to Count Boson de Perigord second son of the Duc de Talleyrand.
