Liquor Raid Nets Sixty Gallons Near Piedmont Park
A Tuesday afternoon raid led by Lt. Bob Waggoner and Lt. Hewitt recovered about sixty gallons of recently arrived whiskey buried near Cross Keys Road beyond Piedmont Park. Detectives Meek and Heltoy guarded the scene while revenuers prepared to take control. A man and a woman arrived in a large touring car, the man investigating the disturbance and informing the woman the stash had been found. Due to insufficient evidence no arrest was made, but officers continued investigating as preliminary proof of quality was shown by pouring liquor into a nearby branch and a brief flash of fire ensued when a match was struck. Participants included Beavers Poole Gantt Bennett and Jameson Meeit Holley.
