The Harold C Beecher, a New Haven bound coal schooner built in 1883, was sunk by an unknown steamer in Vineyard Sound near Hedge Fence shoal around 1 AM. Captain Lowe and six crew escaped in a yaw boat, the vessel drifting over the shoal and sinking two fathoms deep. The steamer’s exact identity remains unknown and the wreck is unlikely to be raised.
Fourteen people were injured when a Greenfield Inter-suburban car collided with a freight train on a belt road in Indianapolis. Morrow bound for Barrow from Parrsboro left July 22.

New York August 4 The three masted schooner Agnas FE Manson coal laden from Newport News Virginia reached port with wreckage after a sudden whirlwind three miles southeast of Atlantic Highlands. Captain Babitt reports spanker boom spanker gaff main gaff and mizzen topsails snapped and all topsails blown away.
The three masted schooner Eliza A Scribner of Philadelphia, commanded by Captain Silas Dodd, was beached on Fire Island bar to prevent sinking after a storm caused a leak. The I J Merritt wrecking tug aided, a boiler and pump were set, and anchors laid with plans to move off at high tide tomorrow. The Scribner was en route from Promised Land New Jersey to Savannah Georgia, via Boston, with crews from Fire Island and Oak Island stations assisting.
Mallory liner Nences from Galveston arrived in New York today after Friday’s machinery trouble. At 6 30 this morning a crank coupling broke causing engine room damage. repairs will take at least a fortnight. Steerage passenger N Pedro has malaria and was moved to Swinburne Island hospital. Three companions from Vera Cruz via El Paso were sent to Hoffman's Island for observation. Vessel fumigated and allowed to dock.

Henry Noles, a negro accused of assaulting and killing Mrs. Charles Williams near Winchester, was captured near Cowan and taken to Winchester. A mob of thousands gathered, he was bound to a tree and burned alive after a brief confession, with no disorder reported. Williams was a prominent Franklin County farmer.
Macon Georgia August 5 It is reported Henry Stewart a black hackman may have been lynched after he allegedly insulted a young white woman. witnesses say a mob pursued him with him bound toward the swamps but the latest word is he escaped.
