Mob of 2000 Gathers at Lawrence Home to Burn Suspect

A large Atlanta crowd believed a suspect was being transported to the Lawrence home for identification and vowed to burn him. Governor Terrell Offers Reward For Negro Suspect

Lawrence recounts brutal assault on Miss Ethel Lawrence and her niece Miss Mabel Lawrence near their home. Governor Terrell authorized a $250 reward for capture with proof to convict. Two suspects, Arthur Reed and Henry Kelly, held. Reed found with bloodied shirt, Kelly seen running near Piedmont Park. Ethel Lawrence, 26, trained nurse from London, remains hospitalized with severe injuries.

Receiver Named for Sage & Co

New York August 33 William E Beverly formerly chief clerk in the employ of the concern was appointed assignee today of the suspended stock commission house of M J Sage & Co with offices in Jersey City and branches county wide. Beverly found liabilities about 330000 with assets of 118000 and filed a 3000000 bond with United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co as surety. All assets are to be delivered to Beverly and the guaranty company. Adams the former policy king was reported to be interested, but Albert J Adams Jr said his father had no interest in M J Sage & Co and that only Albert Adams was involved as largest creditor and beneficiary.

Third Lynching in Ten Days Rocks South Carolina

In St George Dorchester County a 21 year old North Carolina Negro, Willie Spain, was hanged by a large mob after attempting to enter the home of Connor, Dorchester Lumber Company manager. The mob seized the jail keys, dragged Spain from Connor’s house, and shot him about 500 times, the body left in pieces. Governor Heyward was notified but the lynching proceeded despite the marshal’s effort to stop it.

Sheriff reports 21 arrests in railroad camp shooting

A telegraph from Oakdale says Sheriff Reid and deputies near a Ten Mile Santa Fe construction camp captured twenty one prisoners charged with complicity in a shooting affray. More arrests expected before the prisoners are brought in. None of the construction employees were killed, but eleven were wounded, several seriously.

Record breaking log raft reaches San Francisco harbor

The steamer Francis TH Leggett arrived from Astoria towing the largest log raft seen in the harbor. The raft measures eleven million feet of lumber, 740 feet long, 60 feet wide, and 24 feet deep, with a 500 ton lighter on top used to store chains.

Chinese students arrive in Columbus for college study

Consul General J Linn Rogers with his wife and two children arrives in Columbus on vacation. He is accompanied by Miss Florence Hedges his stenographer and five Chinese students. Two students are placed at the University of Chicago and Miss Ogien-Tung goes to Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg Virginia for studies.

Nashville August 23 secretary of the treasury Sealley Shaw will open the Republican national campaign in Tennessee with a speech in Nashville on September 14. The announcement was made today by Lee Brock who runs the Republican state committee headquarters.

Fire damages $10000 at Boston Bakery and Kaplan shop

At 30 o clock this morning the Boston Bakery at 113 Whitehall street caught fire in the rear and spread to the tailor shop of H Kaplan at 116 Whitehall. Estimated total damage will reach $10000 and may rise. The Boston Bakery was practically gutted inside with stock from New York damaged by smoke and water. The general fire alarm was turned in.

Ocean Steamship Police Arrested In Savannah

Savannah police arrested Ocean Steamship Company officers Tabb C Ho Ruth and Barnard McCane on warrants charging thefts from wharves. A shipping clerk A B LaRoach was also detained. all were released after questioning. Accusations stem from John Ray who had new shoes but could not explain their possession. The alleged thefts reportedly occurred over two years with other workers allegedly involved. The Ocean Steamship Company runs a Savannah to New York and Boston service and employs a local police force under the chief of paries.
