In Ogdensburg New York on August 23 Vice President Fairbanks addressed veterans of northern New York and Ransom post Grand Army of the Republic at a dedication ceremony for a Liberty Park monument honoring Oswegatchia townsmen who fell in the Civil War.
The central committee of the International Sunday School Association held its first business session in Difton Mass. Marion Lawrence of Toledo Ohio presented the annual report showing 194,893 Sunday schools 1,822,478 teachers and a total membership of 14,168 in the international field.
A severe storm blasted the city yesterday at 11 10 am lasting about twenty minutes. One man was killed at G B Langley’s home on East avenue as a bolt traveled along a clothes line into a closet. The state capitol and the Kimball house were struck twice each, a house on North Butler Street caught fire, telephones, trolley cars, and police signal boxes were damaged. Eighteen trolley motors burned out, about 1 000 phones silenced, and the Candler building wind damage caused toppled additions and overturned wagons. Continued on Page Two.

At the Ninth Annual League of American Municipalities convention in Toledo August 23 Mayor Woodward of Atlanta urged municipal ownership, arguing city control could benefit heat and streetcar services, prompting a fiery exchange with Hugo Grosser of Chicago. Five hundred delegates attended as officials reported all expenses paid and a healthy balance. Later, W C Hardison of Wadesboro NC killed himself at home, citing ill health and pressures from a failed cotton company, the Independent Cotton Oil Co. in Birmingham.
