Rennes August 22 The Dreyfus trial opened with Maltre Labori, wounded defense counsel, arriving to enthusiastic acclaim. London reports a parliamentary paper on the Transvaal crisis shows Boer efforts to submit suzerainty to arbitrate and British refusals. Milner and the Cape governor contend the Transvaal claim is untenable, with Chamberlain agreeing no further discussion on suzerainty will occur. In a separate note from Rome, Dr Lindsay Johnson wears a ring carved from a Spaniard’s ankle bone from San Juan hill.
Delegates gather for opening contest as Kentucky Republicans begin campaign in state. In Jackson crowds arrive for the Democratic convention with caucusing among governor candidates and talks of a possible Cragardaman-Vardaman coalition against Longine. Four men contest for auditor. Weather hot as delegates crowd into the hall to hear speeches and address party leaders.
A telegraphic dispatch from Chihuahua reports about 90 Yaqui Indians attacked Camaripa, Chihuahua. The town lacked defense as residents barricaded inside for ten hours while several houses burned. Five men and one woman were killed. casualties among the Indians unclear as bodies were carried away. Cavalry detachments were ordered to Camaripa after the attack.

In Columbus Georgia on August 22 a double tragedy occurred as Miss Ida Jackson of Uhland Alabama died of typhoid fever, followed by her sister Miss Lizzie Arant Jackson aged twenty one. Both were daughters of James Jackson and will be buried together in the same grave.
Desperate efforts to find assailants of five white women in Little Rock lead to mass arrests in Pulaski County. Edward Wright identified as a suspect and held for the grand jury with no bail. A large meeting of negroes condemns lynching and supports legal punishment. arms sales to negroes surge amid the unrest.
In an early evening clash outside Stewart Rays stables on Alabama street, Harry M Atkinson struck Councilman W Thomson, sending them to the sidewalk while officer Chasewood intervened. Thomson says he was attacked from behind. Atkinson claims he acted after not allowing dialogue. Both left the scene. public interest swelled as Sheriff Nelms stated he handled no enforcement beyond business matters.
