The Kansas Democrats seek unity as disclosures reveal interparty document substitution during a campaign push. In New Haven a tired General Benjamin Butler was found sleeping in a depot corner after arriving on the owl train from Providence. His secretary explained hotel rooms were unavailable due to delegates, so Butler slept on the depot bench until a Meriden-bound train at 6:53.
The US steamer Tallapoosa, 650 tons, sank after a collision with the Bath schooner James 8 Lowell about three miles east of Vineyard Haven in thick fog. Four crew members are confirmed lost. survivors were rescued by the Gate City and Mary A Hood and landed at Woods Hall. The incident prompts naval department actions and inquiries.
Galveston August 22. Governor Ireland and entourage arrived in Galveston for the state convention amid assertions of a pending arrest. In Suaisrvinie Indiana August 22 Mrs Preace near here prepared breakfast biscuits and by mistake used arsenic in place of baking powder kept in the same place. The family Mrs Preece her grandmother Mrs Calis Victor and Maud Preece two year old child ate the food and became violently sick the child died within hours.
August 22 fire broke out in the Sibley mill picker room causing interior destruction of four floors and heavy machinery loss. Fire was contained with assistance from nearby mills and city forces. Estimated damage ranged from thirty to sixty thousand dollars. the picker house valued at eight thousand remained intact. The incident will delay operations for weeks while new equipment is installed.
