August 20 1881 ex governor Handrick accepts the Democratic nomination for vice president of the United States. He states the honor is unexpected yet accepts for public duty, endorses the convention's principles, and pledges to abide by the country’s judgment. The letter is addressed to Chicago Democratic leaders and compiles a formal acceptance.
Delegates to the New Jersey Democratic state convention converge for the August meeting in Tarstox. George B. McClellan is slated to chair with D. S. Craters and W. Semple among leaders. An afternoon address by Nand Hensel of Penn will cap the session after electors are selected.
The Connecticut Republican State Committee met in New Haven with Judge W. T. Eler as temporary chair. An informal ballot for governor nominated Harrison and Lounsbury and Bulkeley received votes. Mrs. Parnell will proceed to New York to organize Irish interests and seeks to influence party platforms without forming a new party.
Late Mexican advices say conspirators were not shot, with secrecy surrounding trials. A revolutionary proclamation was seized at Jordan's house. Across states, party nominating conventions elect candidates or plan cross-party ticketing, including a push for Prohibition resubmission and a proposed governor compromise.
Contagious pleuro pneumonia is confirmed in Jersey cattle across Illinois farms after intake from Virginia. Investigations trace infection to a February Virginia sale, with outbreaks in Clark Geneva and Boyd areas and postmortems by Dr Salmon. The August report notes Warner & Merritt failure with $500,000 expected liabilities and assignment to W. H. Enokles. Merritt is away. W. D. Echleman & Co. faces embarrassment. Four executions exceeding $200,000 issued in common pleas court against Warner & Merritt. Graham, Loder & Co. wholesale white goods also failed with $87,000 claims.
Despatches from Key West detail Gomez the fugitive steward of the schooner Julia Baker, possible capture upon arrival in New York quarantine, and alleged profits from the cargo. The report notes Gomez alias Williams and the hunt by detectives, with Caribbean routes and ship movements under consideration.
