Governor Harris to issue statement today. Commissioner Davison declares that the state department lacked funds to guard Frank properly.
J N Hagedale acting mayor of Atlanta in Woodward's absence telegraphed The New York World conceding most Georgia press condemns mob law and urges governor action in the Frank case. He says an investigation is ongoing and a reward may be offered to bring the guilty to justice while many still suspect Frank though they remain law abiding.
Governor Harris plans a $500 reward for the capture of the first five mob members involved in the Leo Frank lynching. A pair of handcuffs with marks found near Milledgeville may identify participants, while prison officials describe guarded posts and a failed barricade and recount the abduction and assault on guards.
St. Louis August 12 Special Frank H Dearing 41 of Athens a Georgi nee Fs freight agent divorced his former wife Mrs. Rawline H. Dearing because she refused to accompany him on his transfer to St Louis. The couple had signed a prenuptial agreement to bar divorce or alimony, and the bride Miss Matilda Dolive was not opposed to divorce on principle but believed couples should know each other well before marriage.
New York announces a reward of 460 for the return of the suffrage torch carried through New York and New Jersey by the Women’s Political Union. The torch, a symbol of the Austrian arch and transferred amid ceremony, was stolen after a suffrage meeting at Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. It had been left in an automobile while suffragists entered a store and was missing when they returned.
The article notes families pay about 60 dollars more for living costs than a decade ago with most of the rise in food prices. Puebla Mex August 12 Thousands of people are starving in Mexico City and bodies of women and children are daily being picked up in the streets according to an American Red Cross agent who arrived from the capital. Carranza is accused of withholding food from civilians while using supplies for troops. Rail lines between Mexico City and Vera Cruz are dangerous due to Zapata followers and bandits near Carranza headquarters threaten the capital.
In Athens Georgia on August 18 a woman, broken by a betrayal the day before a planned elopement, attempted suicide twice with Paris Green and poison, then died. She had stayed with a neighbor where her fiancé Stepanid visited and they planned to marry at once. Her brother lived near Watkinsville with his family and the funeral drew a large crowd. The deceased was Misa Fine Kell of Oconee County.
Secretary Daniels disclosed that John Rathom pressed for evidence linking a Civil Service Navy worker to Germany. The Navy took over the Sayville wireless plant, intensified checks on coded messages, and sent several dispatches back for rewriting. Rathom alleged German schemes to control radios in the Americas and the Philippines, prompting further government scrutiny.
Washington August 18. Payment of 668 million pounds of cotton aboard the steamer Southernen diverted to Kirkwall by a British cruiser was made today to W. J. Cabe & Co. of Charleston by Britain. The cotton had been consigned to order in Gotten.
German forces capture Kovno, seizing over 400 guns and vast war materiel. The fortress loss threatens Russian rail access to Petrograd and harms flanks of armies retreating to the Brest-Litovsk line. Grand Duke Nicholas orders orderly retreat as German pincers close. Air raids on England continue with casualties. Dardanelles gains and Suvla Bay advances noted amid broader Balkan impact.
United States Army camp at Texas City was destroyed by a gulf storm with ten soldiers dead and many civilians missing. General Bell reported troops were scattered to high ground as floods rose, homes of officers and enlisted men wiped out, and shelter provided for women and children. Looting reported in Galveston area, rail links disrupted, and relief supplies discussed with civil authorities.
August 18 reports an additional detachment of U S Marines disembarking from warships at Cape Haitien Haiti as rebels refuse to disarm and unrest grows. Foreign residents at Port-a-Paix 36 miles away seek protection amid threats from Haitian rebels.
British steamer Benny of 2702 tons and Spanish steamer Isidore of 2044 tons were sunk. Twenty one crew of Benny and eight of Isidore were saved. Norwegian steamers Romulus and Mineral also sunk with crews saved. Trawler George sunk, crew saved. British steamship Thornfield of Liverpool 485 tons gross and Maggie of Preston 1284 tons gross were sunk. crews saved.
Galveston and coastal Texas endured one of the Gulf of Mexico s fiercest hurricanes with massive property losses and many fatalities. Reports place deaths over 100, with Galveston and Houston among hard hit areas and losses running into millions. Fire and flood devastated sections, a huge sea wall breach flooding inland districts, while tens of thousands sought shelter.
Local thunder showers are predicted on Thursday with possible relief later. Readings show a low temperature, a high temperature, and mean temperature, plus rainfall in the past 24 hours and deficiencies since the month start and since January 1.
