Greenville Pa August 18 Miss Anna Whitehead daughter of Methodist minister of Tunnereville Pa lies in critical condition after a brutal assault by a tramp who tied her to a tree after threatening her with a knife. Broad search across two counties with bloodhounds as authorities seek the assailant described by the girl. Indignation at the crime runs high as deputies scour the Jamestown region for the suspect.
In Asheville NC a man, Mitchell Kirkentoll, 24, was shot and killed by Frank J. Jenkins after Jenkins found Kirkentoll with his wife. Both men drew pistols. Jenkins fired first, Kirkentoll died minutes later. Jenkins surrendered to authorities. A telegraph report from Jonathan’s Creek notes the killing occurred August 1.
District Attorney Lima and Special Assistant District Attorney Wilkerson arrived with the transcript of testimony from the Standard Oil trial in Chicago. The document will go to the attorney general for review to decide immunity in the Chicago and Alton railway case over alleged rape of the Standard Oil Company. Gerard A. Lowther reports no word from Cald Sir Harry MacLean or captor Rafsali after five days in Tangier.
J C McArthur an employee of the Capital City Garage was found dead in his boarding house at 15 North Pryor street. He recently survived a car crash in College Park and his death is attributed to a valvular heart condition triggered by shock. He spoke of a desire to hid his past from his family and there may be a letter in his effects. The body was taken to Harry G. Poole Undertaking and will be held for possible family news before burial by automobilists if no relatives are found.
Atlantic City August 18. John H Hook and two Lancaster sons nearly failed a fatal crash. The car veered 20 feet after the chauffeur fell asleep, overturned an embankment near Pleasantville. Charles Young was trapped under the wreck, extricated after strenuous effort. The senior Hook was internally hurt and paralyzed. both sons suffered bruises and cuts. Fire broke out destroying the car along with baggage and clothing.
Reports from Tangier indicate factional strife between the tribes of Casablanca and Mogador over strategy. Ammunition shortages are cited, a potential attack on Casablanca not yet carried out. Commander Lenquivet is named to govern Casablanca. mosque minaret rebuilding to begin. News from Morocco City, Rabat and Larache remains favorable. French torpedo boat destroyer Bombards and artillery landings reported at Casablanca.
The August 18 opening in Stuttgart drew over 900 delegates from 25 nations. Herr Bebel, keynote speaker, traced socialist efforts under coercion and cited U S delegations amid alleged Idaho persecutions. Herr Singer was elected president as a mass Cannstatt meeting drew 400000 socialists.
An automobile party of five from Bristol Conn. collided with the New York Pittsfield Express at Ashley Falls crossing near Great Barrington Mass. Three were killed instantly Charles I. Rou 40 a mobile manufacturer Mrs Rou and Miss Roberts. Two others Mary Rou and Katherine Rou were injured with Mary in critical condition at Pittsfield Hospital. The driver Mr Root reportedly tried to outrun the train but misjudged its speed and wrecked the car.
Crowds gather along the coast as torpedo squadron boats and the Mayflower with the president aboard prepare to sail for Providencetown. Officers guard launches to avoid damage to the steel-skinned vessels while the Mayflower remains near Plum Point before departure at dawn.
A London telegraph republishes Felix Cohen’s account of twenty years in Siberia. He describes Kara prison, governor Masakoff’s cruelty, hunger strikes, and the women’s abuse, detailing forced feeding and the prisoners’ resolve to win free government for Russia and Poland.
