Ed Cowan is held at the tower under a large bond following a peace warrant against his neighbor. Local authorities allege ongoing disputes prompted the warrant and detention.
Ed B. Cowan, president of the Commercial Discount Co, is arrested on a peace warrant after a Saturday morning shooting near his neighbor Robert C. Howard of Howard Safe and Vault Co. Howard alleges Cowan threatened to shoot him. Cowan disputes the claim and cites a burglary scare. Police joined Howard at Judge Ridley's, then arrested Cowan at his home.
Friends of W H Ferrell push his appointment as assistant city attorney as council meets this afternoon. It is anticipated James Mayson will be elected city attorney to fill the vacancy caused by William Hill’s death. Killed Wife and Self. William Graulich of Lansing shot his wife, then ingested carbolic acid and died. Both were 19 years old.
Aniston Alabama August 15 James Cooper sixteen was saved by companions from drowning at Golden Springs today. The boy was hauled to the bank unconscious and as he rose he fell back into the pond and died before rescuers could pull him out again.
President Taft sent a letter to Secretary Nagel demanding that census supervisors and enumerators avoid political activity while serving. He ordered regulations to dismiss any official who uses influence for any party or candidate, and announced 134 additional supervisors for the thirteenth census, including appointments across Georgia and several Southern states. The letter emphasizes selecting competent appointees via senators and congressmen but shielding the census from political manipulation.
Reports from Tokio indicate the earthquake on Saturday in Shiga and Gifu prefectures caused about 30 deaths and some 600 injuries with extensive property damage. Ozaka in Gifu suffered severe destruction as the Hida river banks broke and the region flooded. Nagoya area and surrounding villages also faced substantial damage.

A dispatcher's office worker collapsed after contacting a live wire and died seven minutes later despite immediate aid from five to six colleagues. Dr. Greenberg was notified and a coroner’s inquest was deemed unnecessary due to multiple witnesses. The survivor Alightmon Heva lived in Lakewood Heights and leaves a widow and three byline relatives.
Cordele August 15. Grant Odum, the black convict who yesterday attempted a criminal assault on Mrs. W. E. Crumpter, was captured today by Sheriff Ward.
News from Monroe reports a black man was hanged from a roadside tree near his home in Doss, Morehouse Parish, Thursday night. His body was shot multiple times. Tension rose after a white resident killed his cow and the negro had sued him over the incident.
AMemphis man Charles Whitsett a cotton planter and six member party member slipped into the Mississippi River at the landing wharf around 6 pm and drowned. Companion Henry Raguet rescued after leaping in. Whitsett body recovered.
August 16 Paris. A military balloon collided with electric wires outside Paris causing a short circuit and fire. The balloon was destroyed and the aeronauts escaped with difficulty amid further chase and confusion.

A severe electrical storm in Ohio overloaded lines taking telephone and telegraph service down. Rail lines suffered washouts on steam and electric roads, crops were harmed, and the Simon Stough bridge near Newark washed away. A Toledo and Ohio Central freight train crossed the bridge as it collapsed. the engine cleared but several cars fell into the stream and fireman Patrick Dreem of Bucyrus was fatally hurt likely.

Directors have accumulated 760000 in cash in the vault guarded by eight watch shifts, more than enough to cover deposits.
Seven deaths occurred in Omaha on August 15 due to record heat. Five died directly from heat, two from other ailments with heat as the chief contributory cause. The temperature peaked at 96 degrees at 2 p.m.

The Hotel Arlington in Santa Barbara California was destroyed by fire this evening. Several hundred guests from across the country were staying there but all escaped unharmed. The estimated loss is $75,000.
In St. Joseph on August 16 the government thermometer at 5 pm registered 101 degrees, the hottest day in eight years. One person suffered a prostration.
