Reports say the Russian fleet is ruined and Japanese forces are pressing an attack on Port Arthur. Bombardment of doomed fates is described as under way.
Dispatches from August 15 describe heavy fighting at Port Arthur with Japanese forces capturing Rasalan batteries near the towers and advancing from Langmountain into the interior. Reports note five warships and two torpedo destroyers returning to Port Arthur August 20 amid intense bombardment and ongoing attacks on Taku and Sieohu mountains.
Chinese van atts last night blew up a railroad section south of Liao-Yang. Twelve Chinese bandits were captured for firing on Russian scouts. two dragoon troopers were wounded. Augusta Ga August 15 Special Major Charles McGregor arrived with Thomas W Watson the populist presidential nominee as he plans to accept the nomination in New York on the 18th and then wage a broad campaign starting in Atlanta September 1. Watson will tour Kansas City Kansas Chicago New England and several western and southern states with a visit to Jackson Mississippi and Augusta postponed to the 28th as needed. He argues the time is ripe to reestablish Jeffersonianism amid party discontent and labor unrest. The Georgia tour aims to spark a high profile campaign with strong regional support and national attention.
City of Atlanta may receive 50000 to close Waverly Place. Louisville and Nashville and other railroads would gain right to use the space for a viaduct and tracks, with the city handling viaduct costs and property damages. Mayor Howell and Washington Street residents pushed the plan after a lengthy conference. council referred it to a special seven member committee.
