Washington August 14 Special says the conference of all silver advocates is under way with two thirds of states represented. Leaders like Farris Jones Turpie shape plans for next year’s campaign promoting free silver within the Democratic Party. Governors Stone and others were chosen to draft an address and form a national committee to push silver sentiment nationwide. Delegates from many states solidify a two thirds coalition to influence the party platform at the upcoming convention.
A large Democratic free silver conference met in Washington to outline a programme and form a national committee with one member from each state. Delegates from Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and many others discussed a detailed plan, with a 4 o'clock adjournment for resolutions and an address to be presented to the full conference tomorrow.
Thomas Hovendon, famed American artist, is killed at a train crossing near Norristown while attempting to rescue a girl. The child also dies. Hovenden’s wife survives. The tragedy occurred at the Trenton cut‑off of the Pennsylvania railroad near Chestnut Hill.
In Pikeville, Tennessee eight miles west of the Cumberland foothills, a morning fire destroyed six stores a blacksmith shop the bank post office and a residence along with several smaller buildings. The hotel and courthouse were damaged but saved. Loss reached $33 400 with only $600 insured. No deaths, several heat prostrations. Also reported was a separate blaze destroying saw mills in Fairfield Maine with heavy losses and insurance at $38 000.
The ex-treasurer, Taylor, was sentenced this morning to five years in the penitentiary after a crowded courtroom heard how he attempted to force a compromise after diverting state funds. He admitted no public defense, stating he had nothing to say when asked. The judge criticized his procurement of funds and noted the section void discussed as central to the case.
In Huntington West Virginia on August 14 Robert Tross L Lucas Lucian Adkins and John Albright prominent county families were jailed after seizing a Madison Creek church during services and cursing the congregation then playing poker while prayers continued. Also in Knoxville Tennessee August 10 bid Tiltedge Jefferson county tax collector and DP C Hil public instruction official indicted for raising school warrants totaling several thousand dollars. In Denver Colorado August 10 hotel manager Van Horn fell from a window at the Grand Central hotel and was killed.
Raleigh August 4 Senator Marion Butler in Concord assailed President Cleveland, charging he favors gold over silver and calls him a hireling of the goldbugs. Butler asserted bonds are payable in gold or silver at the government’s option and urged electing an honest silver advocate, while noting he would oppose any silver candidate opposing the income tax or repeal of the national banking system. He spoke at a populist conference with Worth, Shuford, and Stroud present.
Four riders depart from 49 Mining Camp at dawn for a 908 mile race to the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta. The contest seeks to prevent harsh riding. a $1000 stake hinges on the winner’s horse staying in good condition through 22 registration stations. Competitors include H. G. Payne and Harry Campbell, and Henry Shuetley with Arthur Bingham known as Billy the Kid.
News from Knoxville Tennessee reports probable lynching at Kingston Roane County over alleged assault of a 14 year old girl Myrtle Rex. Suspect George Galther was arrested by Atlanta officers and returned to Kingston for identification, with mob action feared as communication lines fail.
In Jarl ashville Tennessee August 14 a dramatic jail escape attempt was foiled by Mrs Smotherman wife of Rutherford County sheriff. Prisoners used a soup ladle and broom handle to breach a wall but ten inmates were held by her pistol drill and two escaped while bloodhounds hunted the fugitives.
In Omabe Nebraska August 44 the new fire and police board seeks to submit to the supreme court at once if a special session is called. Meanwhile the board proceeds with police force reorganization and holds a session at city hall. The boards exchanged letters and telegrams with Governor Holcomb and Attorney General Churchill as Chief Justice Norval called a Lincoln supreme court meeting.
In New York the Havana mayor Senor Segundo Alvarez denounces American aid to Cuban insurgents and warns that using the American flag to cloak expeditions could provoke a clash with Spain. He says the war is not a simple Cuban matter and blasted Mora claim payments while Cuba remains unsettled. He predicts possible future repercussions if flag protections are abused.
The Times reports Havana dispatch claiming Captain General Campos warned Madrid two options for Cuba crisis. Spain to send 100000 troops or grant Cuba autonomy. Dispatch notes Campos’s cautious comment on hopes of ending the rebellion amid recent yellow fever deaths among Spanish soldiers.
The North German Gazette asserts that while US officials may weigh Spain and the United States, American public sympathy runs with the Cuban rebels. It warns against assuming Cuban victory brings American gain, predicting Cuba would become a small independent state like San Domingo.

At a Jackson County advisory board meeting resolutions declare hearty sympathy with Omaha friends and readiness to help at any time. A telegram was sent to the Omaha police board offering 3:00.
Washington August 11 the treasury reports net gold at 102 531 050 after withdrawals and deposits. Belmont Morgan syndicate deposited 1 658 000 in gold coin for United States notes while 1 150 600 was withdrawn for shipment to Europe. New York August 24 wreck on West Broadway ends with fifteen dead after search of ruins concludes without further bodies found and debris emptied.
Chicago August 14 The Distilling and Cattle Feeding Company known as the whiskey trust was sold at public auction for 9 800 000 to the reorganization committee after bids by Levy Meyer for the committee and a 50 000 cash deposit. The sale confirms the transfer of seventeen distilleries and key properties with conditions to satisfy bonds and trust deeds.
San Francisco August 34 the steamer China sailed for the orient last evening carrying ten Presbyterian missionaries undaunted by reported massacres. The group includes Rev Lacy L Little Rev W M Buchanan Dr and Mrs George C Worth Miss Annie Dowd Mary B Torrence Pauline Dubose Florence Patton Elizabeth Talbot and Josie Woods bound for Marsovan and other stations amid unsettled conditions in the Turkish empire.
Jacksonville August 14 L D Clay of Town discussed a scheme to move settlers to Florida lands. Clay & Hart of Iowa own 3500 acres in this county and 1271 more in nineteen counties for a settler colony. Col Patton said the first boat of about 30 emigrants would arrive late September, with more to follow in October.
