The U S cruiser Olympia arrived in Leghorn Italy from Naples at noon and was greeted with salutes and cordial welcomes. The Italian cruiser Tripoli s commander and the port captain visited Admiral Dewey aboard the Olympia.

Lexington August 13 The anti Gobel state convention will be well represented next Wednesday with small county delegations. Ex Governor John Young Brown and Mayor P P Johnson are expected to head the state ticket for governor and lieutenant governor against the Democratic nominees. The ticket and resolutions affirm the Chicago platform indorse Bryan and free silver, denounce the Gobel election law and its author and the Louisville convention chairman and action.
Governor Bradley dismisses Congressman Berry’s claim that Bryan would be shot if he visits Kentucky. Bradley calls the statement an insult and unfounded, saying Bryan would be in no danger in Kentucky than elsewhere. Ex Senator Blackburn also discredits the remark as idiotic.
Kentucky Congressman A. S. Berry of Newport telegraphs Louisville paper denying he predicted William Jennings Bryan would face personal danger in Kentucky. He clarifies he said Bryan would only make enemies by taking part in the current canvass for William Goebel.

A publicly funded project with a $50,000 guarantee faces a bond call. Officials announce the guarantee will back the park line improvements and ensure completion of upgrades. Community leaders express support as paving and facilities work proceed on the project.

He predicts the collapse of the present government and plans to travel to San Domingo when his partisans, he claims, push the populace into broad support.
London August 18 Five persons are drowned when the French schooner Panphote collides with the steamer Hercules off Lowestoft. The Hercules rescuees the rest of the crew.
