The first day of the steel strike showed a small manufacturer advantage as workers in Chicago Joliet and Bay View did not all walk out. About 60 000 men are involved with leaders promising surprises for the steel trust and appealing to organized labor for support to defend unionism.
In Eridian Mississippi August 12 news arrives of £32000 mostly Spanish gold found in a chest about five miles from Portersville on Friday night by four men using a burial chart. Succarnochee area was a Copeland gang rendezvous with wealth buried there. Another sum over $50000 is said to lie in Succarnochee swamp.
Fall River textile firms voted to reduce weaving wages to 17 cents, a 14 percent cut from 19.8 cents, effective September 32. The move drew unanimous support with one dissent on amount, and labor groups plan a textile council meeting next Thursday to discuss resistance and possible action.
London August 12. A meeting of grain shippers and importers was summoned for Tuesday to resist the London and Indian Docks Company's plan to raise charges from 18 to 1s fd per ton on January 1. River moorings may be sought by leading ship owners and a system of over-side unloading and direct delivery by barges will be organized.

Pittsburgh August 12 The Shaffer strike order shows uneven compliance with about 14 000 men obeying. Initial calls drew 45 000, bringing total out to around 60 000. Gains observed today in Pittsburgh area with expected accessions at McKeesport and Wheeling as week progresses.
The table lists strikers and idled workers led by National Steel Newcastle with 2,000 and Mingo Junction works 1,500 totaling 3,500. Other idle groups include Bellaire 500 and Mingo furnaces 800 totaling 1,300. National Tube Boston rolling mill 425 and related mills total 6,427. Five negro workmen were buried under falling walls while tearing down the old Broad street engine house near the bridge. Shadrack Barrow suffered a thigh fracture with possible internal injuries while John Greenwood George Johnson Tom Smith and Halleck Andrews sustained bruises. No fatalities were reported though rumors circulated of dead men. Ambulances carried the injured to Grady hospital where doctors expected Barrow to recover.

Miss Anna Morgan daughter of J Pierpont Morgan leaves Glenwood Springs with a party for a week long hunt in northwestern Colorado. Professor Henry W Osborn of Columbia University leads the group. Deer season opens August 15 but hunting of bear mountain lion lynx and etyote appears allowed.
In Rome on August 12 Pope Pius X learned of the death of Signor Crispi and expressed reverent reflection saying Providence may decree he be the last of his generation to die.
