Man and Auto in the Water Fort Plain Tragedy
Henry Spalding an expert automobilist from West Orange New Jersey died when his car plunged from a muddy towpath into the Erie Canal four miles east of Fort Plain New York. Despite linemen and aid, the rope slipped and rescue arrived too late. The six foot man and machine were recovered with the car brakes set. Spalding had earlier been delayed by a roadworthy accident near Amsterdam and was en route to Chicago with companions, his wife and her mother proceeding toward Syracuse. The body to Canajoarie.
