In Port Gibson Mississippi Wil Wilson a Black man was lynched in the county jail after being captured following an alleged attempted assault in Hermanville. He died from hanging and gunshot wounds, with a coroner s jury deeming death by hanging and shooting. The act occurred quietly without officials noticing.
Seattle August 11 no credence given to report that Alex McDonald Klondike mining king is insolvent. Kilkenny claimed a Dawson friend said McDonald filed insolvency at courthouse, but Klondike peers doubt it and see no foundation. Also notes Samoa fighting renewed in Victoria telegraph. Merrill streetcar wreck leaves one dead and another injured.
Chicago August 11 Judge Ogden New Orleans Mayor Harrison's father in law sails to Hudson River Mich bearing invitation from Kentucky Democratic committee for Mayor Harrison to attend September tour with W J Bryan to boost Goebel's gubernatorial bid. Ex governor Stone of Missouri also to be invited for a joint Democratic tour to energize support across the state.
The Mazet legislative investigating committee adjourned to September 22 while Attorney Frank Moss plans a four week statement on municipal legislation improvements. Democratic Assemblyman Hoffman opposed the move but was outvoted by Republicans. Testimony touched on city printing contracts and permits for Metropolitan One ducts, with deputies defending existing practices and noting prior administrations.
In Chattanooga on August 11 a mass meeting of laboring men protested the Electric Railway Company president’s decree banning union members from joining unions under threat of discharge. About 500 attended as unions enforce the boycott, and an electric car was shot at near St Elmo, blamed on no union member.
An explosion on the Euclid avenue line in Cleveland tonight wrecked another street car but caused no injuries. The blast occurred near a fashionable block with John D. Rockefeller’s residence on one corner and the home of S. T. Everett on the opposite corner.
In Deadwood South Dakota on August 11 Manley Beaver a fifteen year old student stopped an excursion train before it entered Spearfish Canyon. He alerted the crew that a horse had fallen through a trestle obstructing the track. The teachers 93 in number were saved from possible disaster and Beaver was rewarded with a free course of instruction at the State Normal school in Madison.
In Peoria Illinois a three wheeled automobile carriage is under construction to mount Calts automotive rapid firing gun. The gun carriage will seat four men and hold at least ten pounds of cartridges with a total weight around 1000 pounds and is expected to be finished in a month.
In Greenwood, Herman King faced trial for killing his brother-in-law T. W. Mabrey. After a three day hearing, the jury stood seven for murder and five for manslaughter, yielding a mistrial. Ex-Governor Shepperd was among King's attorneys. The defense claimed a suspect motive tied to fidelity questions and marital distress. Much expert testimony was offered.
Washingtonian T J Barr was sentenced to two years in the Virginia Penitentiary after pleading guilty to two counts of check flashing in Norfolk on July 13. He will be transferred to Washington DC authorities after serving. He issued several counterfeit checks drawn on Lincoln National Bank and signed by J Ralston Co.
Rebels flee Calulet after heavy losses as American forces under General MacArthur advance. Five Americans killed, thirty-one wounded, including three officers. insurgents suffer around a hundred killed and several hundred wounded. Reconnaissance toward Angels finds town burned and abandoned.
Chicago telegraphic correspondence reports William Jennings Bryan stating he will not rule out a presidential run if the party platform is carried out. He adds the platform must fit the party and the candidate must fit the platform, noting his exact position depends on the platform.
W J Stone vice chairman of the national committee declares steadfast support for Bryan and denies rumors of backing Rear Admiral Schley for the Democratic nomination. He states he has always supported Bryan and expects to remain aligned with him. Stone notes Schley’s name has only appeared in newspaper gossip and has never been discussed as a potential candidate.
Knox and Hawkins counties approve $100,000 subsidies each for the Knoxville and Bristol railroad. Sullivan and Grainger vote against $150,000 subsidies. Road will run Knoxville to Bristol, linking with Atlanta Knoxville and Northern and with Norfolk and Western. Contracts to be let next week. work to start soon. backed by financiers from New York to Philadelphia. Tennessee Central officials in Knoxville to press subsidies for a Knoxville to Nashville line.
Charles W. Underwood city attorney and three year councilman died at 6 30 p m after months of ill health. He was 36 and leaves a wife and several children. Son of the late Judge J W Underwood he served Georgia jurists. Funeral set for tomorrow.
Norfolk Va August 11 There is encouragement in the yellow fever situation at the Soldiers home No new cases and no deaths occurred today The quarantine of Norfolk and other points against Newport News Hampton and Old Point will be lifted by 6 o clock tomorrow Inspectors will be removed from trains and boats within a week to ten days if the trend continues to improve
