Former lightweights Corbett and Fitzsimmons clashed at Green's hotel in Philadelphia after a dispute over a bicycle race. Corbett described the confrontation as playful, while Fitzsimmons resisted, leading to a nose-pulling incident and a chaotic scuffle that ended with onlookers separating them.
A northwest storm struck the city with heavy rain and a sharp 1 degree drop in one minute. In minutes houses lost roofs, windows shattered, wires snapped, and a church steeple was unroofed. Citywide damage runs into the thousands with potential injuries not yet reported.
August 11 Junction City Fort Riley soldiers were en route to Fort Worth when Sergeant Haas of Company B, Second Cavalry, disappeared from the excursion party. In Jacksonville Florida on August 11 Rev J Milton Waldron colored preached a sensational sermon on lynchings using Job and Proverbs as text. He traced lynching from post Civil War days through Reconstruction and said whites formed Ku Klux groups to keep ex slaves from power, justifying violence to cover past wrongs and protect white rule.
A plea decries lynching of colored people for rape or alleged crimes and the burning of barns. It warns the national danger from racial violence, urges action, cites major southern papers as joining the effort, and calls for support to redeem the country from oppression and lawlessness.
West Palm Beach dispatch reports Sam Lewis, the man who murdered Tex Collector Highsmith and his nephew John Davis at Lemon City, has been captured in Florida after a dramatic pursuit. He reportedly wounded a pursuer, shot Rev McGregor, and was then captured with assistance from William Russell. Lewis, a Texas transplant and Vermont native, faces jail in Jacksonville. James Ix Marvin and family were arrested for harboring him.

Mt Vernon and Shingle mills burned. dryhouses and warehouses lost at Mont Berry. fires spread toward Laconier as Amacortes reports widespread dry weather fuelling blazes across Mason, Thurston, Chehalis regions and Whidby and Camano islands.
A meteor fell on Swackhammer land near the New York Pennsylvania line stirring a legal dispute over the boundary and land ownership. Swackhammer and Littlejohn claim the stone with a third party asserting discovery rights while scientists excavate to learn its origin and a mysterious inscription sparks theories.
A sweeping complaint before the county board accuses Frank E. Moores, eight years district court clerk, of extorting funds and overcharging fees. The document lists forty four pages of specifications and seeks his removal. Moores denies the charges and vows to pursue an official investigation.
In Carrollton Missouri on August 11 the Taylor brothers were denied a new trial by counsel HOE and sentenced to be hanged October 4 for the murder of the Meeks family. Attorneys for the defendants plan to appeal to the supreme court.
Berlin reports continuous war celebrations with regiments from Brandenburg, Sixth infantry at Cottbus, and the Eighteenth Hessian fusiliers at Rudesheim. Veterans from 1864 1866 and 1870 welcomed, wreaths laid, and patriotic speeches made as crowds sing The Watch on the Rhine and cheer Emperor William and the empire.
In Marion Indiana a clash between a tramp gang and a citizen posse turned violent as about fifty tramps faced a crowd. Otto McFreely and Charles Webster were shot in the abdomen and stomach, respectively, with both expected to die. Citizens arrested several tramps, who deny firing.
A letter from Miss Segrind Hedgeson, a Norwegian medical missionary in central China, recounts daily unlawful acts, destroyed foreigners properties, and mob violence. Telegraph lines down cut contact with settlements. she writes she may not survive the peril, yet vows not to fear death with God beside her.
A young man calling himself J. R. Tinsley, claiming to be a junior partner of Jaques, Tinsley & Co. of Macon, Ga, tried to cash a check here and fled. Telegrams from Mattoon and Jacksonville Illinois and Atlanta Ga urged his arrest. He used the name E. Everett in Jacksonville with a draft from Probost Schoneld & Co. of Indianapolis.
A Chattanooga report notes J. L. Canttrell died in the Nashville railway yards when his foot was caught in a coupling and a freight car crushed him. Canttrell was known in the Camtrell Brog furniture business. The scene described an accident that claimed a life and left a local businessman dead.
A Macon special reports that Mrs. Nobles faces a likely stay or new trial in Twiggs County as attorney Marion W Harris mounts a robust defense. Testimony and asylum records suggest hereditary insanity in Nobles family, with affidavits from Georgia experts and Dr W A ODANiel supporting postponement. Judges and officials discussed supersedeas and possible mandamus actions to prevent Friday execution.
