Four Die As L N Wreck Crashes Into Culvert Near Marietta

At about 1 am a Louisville and Nashville fast freight plunged into a culvert four and a half feet deep north of Marietta. Engineer S. K. Farris and fireman E. C. Channell, both white, and brakeman R. Merrill, white, of Etowah, plus section hand Mike Jackson, black, of Noonday, were killed. The only body recovered by nightfall was the negro, with the whites buried under coal and debris. The wreck followed a washed away cement bridge after days of rain. Eleven cars tumbled into the chasm, delaying rescue efforts amid heavy coal and hay loads and advancing water.
