A Stratford extension streetcar plunged from a forty foot trestle into Peck Millpond near Oronoque, Bridgeport, killing about forty and injuring many. Conductor John Carroll died. Motorman Hamilton escaped by jumping. the car carried about 43 passengers. Ambulances and physicians assisted the injured as investigators began work on the wreck.

Naples August &- Lewla Middings secretary of the United States embassy and Mrs Tidings arrived from Rome to welcome Admiral Dewey at a banquet this evening at the Motel Royal. Eighteen guests included General G Regioni, Vice Admiral Gonzales, the Naples police prefect, Captain Lamberton, four Olympia Ro Parson officers, H De Castro, A TIT Byington, Charles H Caughy, and Dr Hassler. Toasteres praised King Humbert, President McKinley, and Dewey. Dewey said American victory over Spain stirred European opinion but reception was flattering and he would help dissipate prejudice against American civilization. He declined to discuss the Philippines.
