Hardwick to Name State Highway Chairman Amid Debate
The senate passed a substitute measure by a 433 to 11 vote giving Governor Hardwick the right to name the chairman of the highway commission subject to senate confirmation. The bill reallocates car tax funds to counties via the highway department, with funds set aside for emergencies and limited annual retention by counties. An amendment to elect the chairman locally failed, while supporters argued the governor’s appointment ensures efficiency and avoids politics in the department.
