Rates fixed on autos under tools tariff debate
Washington action on the tariff bill fixes auto rates at 16 percent for cars valued up to 1000, 30 percent for 1000 to 1500, 45 percent for 1500 and over, and 26 percent on durable parts. Opponents warn foreign cars and parts will bypass these through imports, while amendments to equalize chassis rates failed. The committee approved the proposed schedule amid broader tariff discussions and related line items for bicycles, axles, chains, and other metal goods.
