Richard Leach to die by electric chair at Sing Sing
August 4 Sing Sing reports completion of preparations for the execution of Richard Leach, a wife murderer. He killed his common law wife Mary Hope Newkirk in November 1894. The sentence is scheduled for about 4 o clock Monday morning, marking the third execution at Sing Sing this year.

Massive Sprague Fire Destroys Town Structures in Washington
A hurricane wind fueled a blaze at Million's livery stable in Sprague Washington on August 4. The fire jumped tracks to the station grain elevator and railroad ice storage houses. Within hours most south side buildings along the tracks and the main business district burned, sparing only a few structures and the First National Bank. Three engines at the roundhouse were destroyed while seven with steam up were saved. The railroad lost all buildings it owned in Sprague east of a main street.

Death by own action in Atlantic City former hotel manager
A. W. Lambert, aged 1, ex manager of the Baltimore and Ohio hotel in Deer Park and Berkeley Springs, committed suicide in Atlantic City N J by ingesting laudanum at the Ashton hotel after becoming penniless following a period of heavy drinking. He had worked briefly as night clerk at the Hotel Rudolph after arriving from New York. The county physician deemed an inquest unnecessary and a relative arranged burial.
