Toronto council amends charter on electing city officials

Toronto city council adopted an amendment to the charter to elect the general manager of waterworks city electrician building inspector city warden clerk of the council city marshal city comptroller and recorder by popular vote in the same method as other officials. Passed without opposition. Dr Longino elected to fill Dr Steiner’s vacancy on the board of health. The meeting approved bids and allocations including funds for street work faith school retaining wall and Labor Day. A convention in Toronto was proposed for Mayor Maddox and colleagues to attend.

Missouri Pacific to Be Consolidated

New York August 2 a special meeting of Missouri Pacific stock holders on August 7 will vote on consolidating about twenty one companies forming the Missouri Pacific system. A new Missouri Pacific Railway Company would own the properties with $240 million in stock. A blank mortgage of $10 million and more would cover all properties. About $90 million of bonds would be reserved for refunding. the rest would fund new capital. Bankers syndicate has indicated willingness to underwrite $86 million of the new bonds.

Forest Firefighting Across Bourne and Nearby Areas

North Falmouth and nearby towns battled forest fires this afternoon with around two hundred men aiding efforts. Damage extended from the Bourne area to nearby regions, including fires last Saturday and Sunday. A separate blaze near Mattapoisett was also reported. Estimated losses run to eight thousand dollars.

Bitter fight begins as tariff report read in Senate

Washington August 2 The Senate dragged through nearly seven hours of reading the conference report on the tariff bill amid numerous conferences and sharp exchanges. Senator Daniel charged fraud and lynch law tactics in excluding democratic conferees while Aldrich apologized and defended the committee's conduct in signing the report. Continues on page three.

President Taft Sees Wright Break Air Record at Fort Myer

President Taft witnessed Orville Wright set a new aeroplane record at Fort Myer Virginia by completing a straightaway and return flight of miles in 114 minutes 42 seconds with Lieutenant Foulois aboard, earning a $35000 government prize. The event drew thousands of officers and notables, including Aldrich and Payne, in Wright’s tent as the president called the flight the most remarkable sight.

Council Amends Liquor Section in Fulton County Recorders Power
