Rampolla appears to lead in the papal conclave as votes remain unsettled while discussions turn to Cardinal Creto ni and other cardinals in the mixed rooms. Reports note preliminary movements and the scrutiny of voting patterns inside the rooms as the process continues.
Rome reports Cardinal Cretonis remains in uncertain health and mood. He reportedly did not wish to participate in the conclave, fearing he is unworthy to interpret the divine will by casting a vote, and now questions whether he should vote at all.
In Rome on August 2, a large cargo of provisions was examined as it passed through the St. Peter's wicket gate while the papal conclave entered its second day. Crowds gathered around St. Peter's Square awaiting the smoke, with tens of thousands filled the plaza and surrounding colonnade as troops guarded the basilica. The scene showed unprecedented public interest in the papal election.
A Colima volcano eruption is reported with great smoke clouds drifting northwest on a sea wind. A new lava outflow is suspected though dense smoke obscures details.
In Oyster Bay New York on August 2 profane and abusive language was directed at President Roosevelt and his family as they rode to attend morning services at Christ Church.
In Chicago the August 2 special report covers J Edward Kirbye of Atlanta Theological Seminary delivering a southern view on race at First Congregational church. He argues race conflict exists nationwide, urges facing the issue openly, says southern opportunity may lift the negro but warns against deception by northern reformers. Roosevelt's Namesake Dead. The Toledo report notes Theodore Roosevelt Boychasky, one of quadruplets, died of cholera infantum. Senator Gorman at Home. Laurel Maryland reports U S Senator Arthur P F Gorman returning home with family.
An Oyster Bay resident named McCann caused a disturbance as President Roosevelt, accompanied by Mrs. Roosevelt and two children, arrived at a church. Secret service officers hustled him away after he shouted and used abusive language while blocking the road. The president ordered him to leave the vicinity but later expressed no further action should be taken.
On school street near Grange hall two bodies were found, identified as F. P. Egan and Mrs. Saddle Booth of Spencer. Police theorize the man killed the woman by slashing her throat and then ended his own life with the same method.
London dispatches report an earthquake destroying houses in Filattierra and Mulgrazo in Tuscany Italy. Filattierra with about 2000 residents and Mulasso with around 4000 lie near Apemsia on the Gulf of Genoa.
In Lexington a report states General Cassius Clay’s will, dated March 3, 1910, appoints Dora Brock and two others as executors and allocates half the proceeds from sales to them. White Hall lands remain in trust for park use, with funds directed to a park reserve. A separate will from May 12, 1909, is to be probated tomorrow. Colonel James Scott assists attorney J. M. Norwood in handling the case.
Americus Georgia August 2 Special W Bacot of the Southern Express Company shipped watermelons to London as a gift. Several fine specimens weighing six pounds each were selected and crated separately. Bacot expects the fruit will withstand shipment and be regarded as the best seen on that side of the Atlantic.
An explosion was set off today under a Northern Pacific bridge over the Yellowstone River east of Livingston. The blast shattered windows in many homes and twisted the bridge out of alignment. The failure is blamed on inexperienced individuals.
Placerville reports say逃 escapees from Folsom prison remain at large after last night's ambush near Grand Victory mines. Two militiamen Rutherford and W C Jones were killed. Al Gil shot through the lung and not expected to recover. Philip Spinger, hard of hearing, was fatally shot by a picket. Four convicts were later located near Lotus but exchanges of fire yielded no results. In Placerville two convicts were surrounded and a skirmish ensued with Glen Wedgewood wounded in the hand.
Tangier August 2 It is reported the pretender to the sultan Bu Hamara has died of wounds received after leading a revolt begun October 31 190? The last major engagement noted was June 16 when he defeated the war minister of Morocco. No prior confirmation of wounds was given at that time.
Mrs Bamoe Parker reported a theft of $80 in jewelry including diamonds rubies and solitaire studs. She wore the pieces at a Saturday night hotel opening reception and hours later intruders entered her home to steal more gems. Parker is the widow of J K Campbell and wife of Colonel Samuel Parker.
A southbound interurban car collided with a northbound vehicle three miles south of Mooresville at 10 20 am injuring more than thirty people. Two may die. The southbound car carried Bethany Park bound passengers. Bethany Park is the Christian church summer assembly. All injured were taken home.
Partly cloudy conditions in Georgia give way to warmer weather in the west. The day notes council finance committee action on pure milk, a crowded legislative calendar with little time left, and transfers pending in the Collier case. Governor Jess of Alabama vows state control over felony convicts before leaving office. The state hor ticultural society meets in Athens, Georgia summer school nears session end, and watermelons from Georgia head to London. Brunswick reports record crossties shipped in July. Trials, rifle shoots, and campus improvements also mark the day.
Alderman Longino will ask the finance committee to fund a dairy inspector, a veterinarian to enforce sanitary measures at Atlanta dairies. The measure aims to protect infants and invalids from impure milk by ensuring cows’ health and clean facilities. Health officials cite a report showing many milks are unsafe and urge rapid action despite prior budget limits.
A Scarborough man jumped from a Tybee excursion train near Centre railroad, suffered a brain concussion, and remained in Savannah hospital tonight. He had been an excursionist and a ticket found in his pocket identified him as a Scarborough resident.
