In Atlanta a Union captain named Fairlie assumes a Confederate persona to forage for forage. He is sheltered by Mr Lane and courts Lane’s daughter Lida while Morgan’s raiders pursue him. After a tense night poring over loyalties, Fairlie is captured while attempting to escape with a stolen horse. Lida confesses no betrayal, and Fairlie is ultimately exchanged, aided by Lane and the scattered whispers of a divided home front.
