Washington reports a playful scene as Baby Ruth wandered the East Hall while clerks filed applications and a marriage in Albany drew praise. President Cleveland survived a minor head injury when a carriage top struck him, prompting a quick medical check and a delayed departure for Chicago.
Chicago offers to pay the value of the Jefferson Davis mansion now used as a public school and convert it into a Confederate museum. N F Natlaw of the Great Northern hotel writes that Virginia ladies support moving the historic home to Chicago and building a suitable replacement on site. The plan includes transferring artifacts and possibly the Davis mansion furniture, with the owner Waldron demanding at least $2.00.
In New York on April 23 bankers expressed satisfaction after a conference with Secretary Carlisle. They affirmed government resolve to maintain gold and silver parity, and said rumors of friction were unfounded. They noted potential gold support from bank presidents if treasury needs rise, while leaving terms open and denying imminent bond or loan actions.
Misinformation spread that Mrs. Cleveland was ill during the naval review. She returned to Washington in good health, traveling on a private car attached to the president’s train with Mrs. Bipsell and Secretary Thurber, arriving about eleven.
Nashville April 28 Special The federal grand jury returned a third indictment against Porterfield cashier of the defunct Continental National Bank. Clarion B Duncan as New York broker and Motter Eid alleged to have ordered margin calls that depreciated stock value. Porterfield accused of instructing Duncan to secure loans and to sign checks that charged the account totaling 4800 dollars with checks marked cash though worthless.
A grand naval review in New York yesterday featured foreign fleets marching Broadway with their own bands while marines and US forces accompanied them. Admirals from Britain France Germany Italy Spain and other nations led a ceremonial parade amid crowds as Governor Flower and Mayor Gilroy hosted a state banquet at the Waldorf Astoria.
New York April 28 A weekly trade review notes a dampening effect from gold coin fears and political finance talk. Weather and unsettled money markets slowed business nationwide with declines in iron and cement but some gains in tobacco and certain hardware. Bank failures and cautious collections slowed commerce, while copper and tin prices fell and wheat and corn rose amid mixed export figures and cautious forecasts for spring planting.
In Savannah Ga on April 28 a large New York banking firm is purchasing Southwestern stock in bulk from this point. Nearly 2,000 shares have left there in the past week at 74 1 2 cents. Theories blame Terminal operators for a potential attack on the reorganization plan or speculate on a favorable outcome boosting returns. Total for the week 1 14,745 bales, deficit for the twenty nights of April 57,126 versus the same time last year, and 100,781 compared with the year before. The 4d day period ends with a total deficiency of 2,415,000 bales versus the prior season, with movement down 1,906.52.
London April 28 The Pall Mall Gazette reports that William Townsend who faced charge for discharging a revolver unlawfully in a public place was actually plotting to assassinate Mr Gladstone. He waited for the premier to depart his residence with intent to kill but his resolve broke when the sight of Gladstone reminded him of his father on his deathbed. The pistol dropped and Townsend fled to a park bench where he cried. He allegedly then entered the Commons central hall that night as the home rule debate raged.
Bonham Texas April 28 Jim Frarke and Sam Massey pegreex were hanged at 2 o clock in front of about 40 000 people. A mob outraged Mrs Clementa a white woman aged 51 near Amboy. The Smith family near Sherman suffered severe violence in an earlier attack. The mob acted amid widespread fear and distress in the community.
A gala procession of Arabs on fine steeds and camels paraded through the Turkish village at the Chicago World’s Fair. Dignitaries from the Medinah temple and various delegations joined a ceremonial welcome and feast at the mosque. A later report notes a continuing dispute over piano exhibits with Mr. Thomas’s musical plans under review by the commission.
News from Raleigh reports a sensational affair in Mitchell county. William Blalock, a white man, outraged Philo Pritchard’s wife, spurring a posse pursuit near Elk Park. Blalock was shot at by Reuben Buchai and Jernck Greer, then jailed. authorities say the man denies the shooting. The case involves Pritchard and others, with various injuries and investigations underway.
