Justice Cobb’s Own Ruling Arises Against Him in Court

An associate justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, A. J. Cobb of Athens, appears before his former colleagues as counsel in the Habeas Corpus case Fears versus Fearn. Cobb’s prior decision is cited against him, prompting amusement as he notes a volume in which his own opinion appears. The scene unfolds as Cobb and City Attorney James J. Mahon argue that a daughter should remain with her paternal guardians, while H. C. Peeples for the grandparents mispoints by quoting Cobb’s name. Concise remarks highlight the court’s reversal of Cobb’s earlier stance, creating a rare moment of self-scrutiny among jurists.
