Severe frost warnings sweep the region with heavy freeze expected to injure peach and other fruit crops in Georgia and neighboring southern states. Weather officials urge protection and anticipate significant agricultural losses if temperatures plummet further.
The morning reported a 39 degree temperature with a dying wind and clear skies. Frost warnings spread from Atlanta to northern Georgia, Charleston, and nearby areas as vegetables and peas face potential damage while wind spared some trees and gardens. Snow also reported in Nashville and Glasgow areas with nearby temperatures around 37 to 42 degrees.
Henry White the American ambassador to Rome was received by King Victor Emmanuel in a formal audience at the Quirinal today He presented his letters of credence and later joined other members of the diplomatic corps in cordial conversations before touring palace rooms with the prefect Count Ty. The scene moved with state carriage and marked by a brief, ceremonial greeting. Meanwhile in Alabama veterans plan to organize Confederate Veterans groups with Memorial Day as a target for formalization led by Commander Yen de Graff.
Fire at 869 Peachtree street yesterday afternoon destroyed the roof of a frame residence valued around 2500 dollars and fully insured. Leonard, a well known Atlantan in frail health, was rescued from the flames by neighbors and firefighters after being unable to aid his own escape. The blaze started from chimney sparks and the department arrived as the structure burned, keeping the fire from extending further. Leonard, formerly with the Smith Inman Company, was removed to safety but survived the ordeal with shock and exposure.
April 16 Glanwood Springs California reports no word from Secretary Loeb or the president's party. Communication awaits opening tomorrow and a courier is expected to arrive with letters and personal mail from the president. Weather heavy snow and rain disrupt surrounding mountain tops as the camp returns.
Covington Ga April 1 Special A brutal transit tragedy as Kelsey Cranford white 22 and his brother Walter are attacked by four unknown Blacks near Broughton station on the Central railroad. Twelve rounds fired fatally wounding Kelsey while Walter receives buckshot in the left arm. The attackers fled as alarm spread through the community.
Delegates to the American Anti-Tuberculosis League began arriving in Atlanta with eight trains, and the gathering will open in the hall of the house of representatives. Dr George Brown of Atlanta will preside as hundreds of physicians from across the country attend. Hotels report room reservations filling up as national and state medical societies enroll delegates. Dr S E Robertson of Newark promotes Newark as next convention site. Notable arrivals include Dr J G Moore New Hope Kentucky Dr J J Kennedy Coll of whom are at Kimball and Dr P C Hawen Milwaukee Wisconsin at the Piedmont.
Report describes an April 18 incident in Albany Georgia where an officer confronts a Black man identified as Thomas Began. The confrontation escalates as the officer orders surrender, shots are fired, and the prostrate man is mortally wounded. Witnesses and details are partially unclear due to damaged OCR.
In St Louis on April 16 Captain James A Rider, six years old and janitor of St James Memorial Episcopal Church, shot himself in a room adjacent to the auditorium during services. The shot was heard plainly by worshippers as the rector ended the service and requested all to depart. Little is known of Rid er’s past. reports say he was born in Liverpool and served as a captain in the British merchant marine.
In Mattoon Wisconsin on April 18 Thomas Beveridge nephew of U S Senator Beveridge Indiana stabbed James Datewood during a bar quarrel. Beveridge was shot twice while trying to flee an officer. Both men wounded and in hospital. Warrants issued for arrest.
St Louis reports the new steel Southwestern railway bridge over the Mississippi at Thebes will open to traffic next Tuesday. The double tracked high level structure cost 3.5 million dollars and took three years to build. It features red through and Cantilever spans with a total height of 281 feet and length detailed as 2907 feet.
A Tele machus report from Ong Kong dated April 16 cites unconfirmed sightings of seventeen to eighteen vessels of a squadron near the Natuna Islands north of Saigon and firing 3 20 p m April 12 150 miles north of Natuna. No decisive confirmation of the report has been learned.
The North German Lloyd steamer Prinz Heinrich reported sighting eighteen vessels of the Russian Baltic squadron in Kamranh Bay at noon Friday. No Japanese warships were seen. Kamranh Bay lies in Cochinchina about 200 miles northeast of Saigon. Singapore dispatch notes possible forthcoming battle and torpedo boat warfare as Russia and Japan contest the China sea. Defense zones around the Pescadores and nearby islands are ordered with standard navigation limits.
