The Man Who Saved Boxing From Desuetude

A historical sketch credits Thomas Johnson with reviving boxing in the late 18th century. From dockworker beginnings in Derby and London, Johnson defeats rivals such as Jarvis, Oliver, Lave, and Ryan to restore public faith, becoming England’s champion in 1787. His battles against Isaac Perrins draw massive bets, he wins after sixty two rounds, and though he later loses wealth and retires, his rescue of the sport is memorable.
