New York April 13 The bail bond of George Edward Mills a law partner of the son of Dr R C Flower was forfeited today when Mills failed to appear in court to answer the charge of trying to buy the indictments against Dr Flower from an assistant district attorney After arraignment in the magistrate court Mills had been indicted by the grand jury and today neither the prosecution nor Mills appeared.
Alfred Vanderbilt Paul Sarfoll and Reginald C Vanderbilt and their chauffeur were fined ten dollars each today in a special session of the district court for driving automobiles through Middletown at speeds exceeding ten miles per hour. Newport R. I. April 14.
Albany April 13. One hundred representative members of New Yorks democratic press attended a banquet celebrating Thomas Jeffersons birthday. Sen David B Hill attacked the Republican administration in this state, ridiculed President Roosevelts policies, and urged Democratic harmony as the path to victory. A memorial to Jefferson was discussed by the governors and would be built as a westward project.
New York April 13 Jacob H Schiff of Kuhn Loeb & Co a director of Northern Securities and other railroads warned that if the decision is confirmed on appeal it will be far reaching restraining power over industry. He said the ruling could make illegal any action that puts a company in a position to restrain trade and warned of the danger of blackmail while remaining cautiously optimistic about recovery and economic adjustment. Morgan Hill Harriman conferences discussed the case but no formal talks on the decision occurred.

James J. Gatewood, noted in railroad circles, was arrested at the Marion hotel by Detectives Campbell and Kilpatrick on charges of cheating and swindling over a $85 check to Burnett, a jewelry dealer in the Kimball. Gatewood allegedly bought the business, issued the dishonored check from Neal Loan and Banking Co, and took possession of goods while repaying only part of April 7 sales. Gatewood claimed a lawyer’s deportt would cover him. Burnett declined to comment. Gatewood, once a Central railroad man, could face transfer to the circuit court.

New York April 13. Passengers arriving aboard the steamer Philadelphia from Venezuela and Puerto Rico include Auguste Pulida the Venezuelan chargé d affaires at Washington. The Royal Danish Commission members did not speak during the inquiry.
In Canton a planned assault during Chinese New Year was thwarted by swift actions of Commander F J Drake aboard the US ship Monteray and coordinated moves with English, French, and German vessels. Precautionary measures closed inner-city gates, arrests were made, and stores seized as rebels, led by Hung Chun Fuk, were deterred. Officials credit the joint defense and timely information.
Twenty United States soldiers imprisoned at Fort Leavenworth appeal to the United States circuit court of appeals in St Louis arguing their court martial sentences fail to specify whether confinement is at a penitentiary or military post and challenge the imposition of hard labor. Five men were killed and two severely burned today by a gas explosion in a mine operated by Kangas and Texas Coat Company at Carbon Indiana. The dead are Floyd Oder George Teek Frank McMullin Jerry Kincaid Co. A. Fields. The injured are Robert McCrany and Ben Hamilton. Seventy five men were in the mine at the time. The cause is unknown.
