Tariff clash hinges on wool and sugar repeal debate
Washington, April 12. President Wilson issues an ultimatum to cane sugar growers in Louisiana and beet sugar producers in the Midwest as Congress weighs Underwood tariff revisions. A three year sugar duty of one cent per pound is proposed, with a push to place wool on the free list. The fight risks a veto if a混lodge of sugar and wool provisions emerges, while the Senate contemplates caucus pressure and possible cross-party support to pass a combined tariff bill.
