Trial of Sexton in Shreveport Manslaughter Verdict
In Shreveport Louisiana April 5 1927 Sexton a young white man from a prominent family was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Zet Oliver a Black man. The jury recommended mercy to the court and Sexton was remanded for sentence. Witnesses testified that Sexton kicked Oliver after he refused to yield space on the sidewalk and that Oliver grabbed his leg prompting the fatal blow. Sexton claimed he believed Oliver intended to shoot. This marked the first capital case to go to trial in Caddo parish since a recent law and order meeting denounced the acquittal of J J Van Cleve and Mr and Mrs Hervey Little.
