Washington April 1 Senator Lorimer of Illinois faces a new investigation in the current session. A resolution to declare his seat vacant will be offered by Republican insurgents with La Follette likely to lead. An investigative committee may include Hoot, Borah, Cummins, Jenubiteang, Bailey, and Bacon. Chicago April 5 Edward Hines denied soliciting a $100 fund to reimburse contributors to Lorimer’s election.
Funk general manager of International Harvester testifies before state senatorial investigating committees. He says Edward Hines of Chicago proposed Con tributing 18 000 to reimburse men who funded a 200 900 slush fund to eject William Lorimer from the United States Senate. Details continued on page two.
Boston lawyer William H Lewis, a Negro, was sent to the Senate by President Taft for appointment as assistant attorney general. Though assigned to Indian depredation, the post is largely nominal and Lewis may handle varied government cases and even appear before the Supreme Court in postal matters from Atlanta. He joins a small corps of five assistant attorneys general.
In Birmingham Alabama this morning FE Tenney shot and killed 86 Phillips near Dunavent following a fifteen year feud over land location. The men had been arguing as the land lines were being run and Phillips needed to move houses.
W B Tennent, living in Marcelle Illinois, surrendered to Atlanta police early Wednesday morning and asked to be jailed for a killing. He said the murder haunted him and he wished to answer to the law. He will be returned to Marcelle for trial. The incident began August 16, 1910, after a saloon altercation with a stranger.
A lone robber armed with a gun boarded a train and demanded valuables, triggering a swift chase as passengers reported the incident to authorities. Police units pursued the suspect but details of capture remain unclear.
A masked bandit armed with a revolver robbed three men of about $3,000 aboard a vestibuled coach of a westbound Ex-Press Big Four train near Selma, Indiana. After breaking glass the robber shouted shell out and fled as the train slowed for entry to Muncie, with shots fired at him as he leaped from the rear platform.
Washington April 5 George Fort of Georgia is named by President Taft as deputy assistant treasurer of the United States. A Lumpkin county native with deep Georgia ties, Fort has served in the Treasury since 1893 under Cleveland and rose through law clerk and comptroller ofcurrency roles to chief of division. His promotion follows eighteen years of steady work. he will be 51, earn 3200 dollars yearly, and succeeds William H Gilson in Philadelphia.
An unknown speeding auto struck the buggy carrying C. R. Walker and G. C. Legg at Whitehall and Hood streets at 7:30 pm, injuring both men and wrecking the buggy. Officers Web and Bullard traced a leaking oil trail, but the car fled toward town. A stolen car report linked to McDonough, Ga., matches the description, with two drunk motorists also sought as clues.
Deeds and contracts signed to erect a $100,000 theater at Grace and Eighth streets in Richmond Virginia. The venue will be managed by "Jae" Wells.
