Rhode Island results show a dramatic drop in Democratic turnout with about 40 percent fewer votes. Republican Lippitt secured the governorship by a substantially larger margin, and the entire Republican ticket appeared elected as returns came in.
Governor-elect Charles Warren Lippitt leading Republicans won a decisive statewide victory while Democrats retained five seats in the legislature. East Providence and Pawtucket approved license issues after fierce battles, Covenry backed Clean Sweep for Memblicans, and Newport and Ro were quiet amid a heavy Republican showing with governor and assembly totals significantly above last year. Ballots favored 4 percent gold bonds for 3.1 million dollars over thirty years, carried by about 2,400 voters. Lippitt, born in Providence October 8, 1846, trained at Brown and Harvard, later entering his father’s business and the Soja plant.
Detroit dispatch reports Moore republican elected to the Minnesota supreme court by about 26 000 with Atterfield and Hackley also securing large pluralities. State ticket returns show strong republican gains, while Missouri voters cast light turnouts and shifted majorities in several cities. Texas charter elections favored democrats in most non-partisan races, and Denver saw a straight republican slate win with McMurray mayor.

In Jacksonville Florida on April 1 the body of William Rawls, a Black man, was found swinging from a limb and riddled with bullets after being taken from guards at Newnansville, Alachua County. He had been lynched for the March 2 murder of H B Raul, a prominent merchant of Newnansville, committed to rob him. A coroner s jury investigates the lynching as the father of the condemned man was hanged four years ago for a similar crime.
Willem J. Wilson of West Virginia was sworn in as postmaster general by Chief Justice Funfer and assumed duties immediately. The private ceremony in the postmaster general’s office had only Mrs Fuller and Miss Bessie Wicon as witnesses.
Chicago returns show a broad Republican win with George B Swift elected mayor by a large plurality over Frank Wentar. Several aldermanic seats flip to Republican or anti-machine candidates including notable defeats of Hinky Dink Kenna and John McGillen. Civil service reform passes by 40,000 votes but will delay implementation for 90 days.
It leaked out that Trixie Hamilton, a Putnam's Theater Comique actress, quietly married John G Baylor, a medical student and son of a navy surgeon. The couple's postnuptial status remains unclear as Baylor could not be located while Trixie continued performing.
Nashville special reports Senator Whithorne offered a resolution to stop work on the new penitentiary and withhold payments to Kutcher and Co. and the architects Smith and Lambert until ordered. The measure passed unanimously and heads to the house. Also noted are political contests, warden appointment at Coal Creek, and house actions on telephony and mineral payments. In South Carolina reporters describe a mill interests delegation touring mills in Pelzer and Spartanburg, with Southern Railway officials guiding them.
The eleventh annual session of the Methodist Episcopal Church South closed in Washington with pastors assigned for the year. A motion to extend thanks to city officials and newspapers triggered division among clergy, ending in a narrow defeat of a separate resolution to thank the press for accurate reports.
Four miles northwest of Galena Kansas a double murder occurred after James Walters and Samuel Cox, with two Cox boys, went to the river. One body found with a back wound, another missing. Walter s later found hanged near Boston Mills. Whether self-inflicted or lynched unknown.
The steamer Tron Queen of the Pittsburg and Cincinnati Packet Company burned at Racine Ohio River. Passengers escaped safely except for Cincinnati chambermaid Martha Masely who drowned after leaping from the rail. Ship burned rapidly from bow to stern, sinking to a water line with remains in thirty feet. Crew reported 15 Pittsburg passengers and a party of seventy on board. cargo largely lost, books saved. A replacement boat will be built. vessel valued about $60,000 with $30,000 insurance.
London April 3 Mr Arthur J Balfour MP spoke at the bimetallic league urging a future international medium of exchange to reduce industry harm and favor an international agreement. Berlin April 3 in the upper house Maron von Manteuffel moved to refer Count von Mairbachs proposal to a special committee to accelerate currency settlement by an international agreement.
An Englak View reports London commentary that the Daily News will publish a leader tomorrow explaining the Chicago city section. It mentions clean sweeping of corrupt government and criticizes Bore plain speaking and Mr Wannaye, noting public concern over the issue.
London April 8 at the central criminal court Oscar Wilde faced the Marquis of Queensberry in a high profile suit over alleged immorality. Prosecution led by Sir Edward Clarke, defense by Howard A. Cordon with Lord Alfred Douglas’s counsel Bealey present. Wilde appeared unconcerned as the case opened with charges centered on letters and writings arising from Wilde’s relationship with Douglas and alleged solicitation of men for immoral acts.
Lord Alfred Douglas asked for help from Wood. Wilde admitted thinking it blackmail yet gave £5 and saw him off to America. He kept perfect poise, ran his hair, and debated the letter to Lord Douglas calling it beautiful but not a tester. He denied madly adoring a younger man or that a lover affected the reader.
A Kingston cable reports Cuban revolutionary leaders meeting near Anoyo Blanca with General Bartolome Masso named provisional commander in Santiago. Masso and aides claim 8000 to 5000 troops, mostly armed, vow to protect noncombatants and families of enemies, while continued battles with Spanish forces unfold in Port-au-Prince reports.
The Havana dispatch reports the sunboat Yandia discovering a foreign fishing smack near Daaba west of Baracoa. The smack captain is dead, two sailors captured aboard the India, and insurgents landed by the attackers. A skirmish with Spanish troops followed, with insurgents fighting without casualties. One prisoner was captured later, revealing that Maceo and Combert lead the fugitives, pursued by several regiments, while Baracoa area remains quiet.

Assistant cashier Frederick W. Griffin admitted taking 50000 from the Northwestern National Bank in Chicago. He concocted false transfers to cover the loss over six months and moved funds to Omaha, hoping to hide the crime. Griffin, a 36 year old with a wife and two children, was arrested and faces federal bond and hearings.
April 3 report identifies Mary Martin as the murdered woman found on Sixth Avenue. William Caesar is accused by detectives of choking her after a quarrel, then dismembering the body and discarding remains near a bank building. Caesar allegedly left the trail by a failed attempt to hide the bundle and later confessed.
Harry St John son of ex governor St John and former legislator shot and killed his wife near Oklahoma City. He claimed the gun fired accidentally after he confronted her with a letter. Miss Mary Felton St John died at 28, leaving two children. He was later declared not guilty in other cases. Police also reported a separate embezzlement verdict in Michigan and a boxing fight at Coney Island ending with Walcott winning on points.
