A Pennsylvania banker named Mitchell faced thefts from a back vault and, with the aid of a sharp private investigator, uncovered that Mrs. A. B. Gray had plotted the crime using a park note system and a coded vault key. The detective tracked Gray’s accomplice, the Pittsburg man, and staged a nighttime takedown at the bank ending in Gray’s exposure and restoration of the stolen money.
Annot Brunson’s vanity draws her to the city where she flirts with rivals, including Raymond St. Ives who lures her to marry, only to reveal he has a wife. Rollin Dracut learns of the deceit, and Annot’s scandal ends with hardship, illness, and eventual return to a former betrothed, Jaynesville.
Durande of the One Hundred and Twelfth cuirassiers endures a year of mourning after his wife of a month dies in Rome on their wedding tour. She urges cremation, and the urn becomes a living presence in his life. He doubles as widower, bachelor, and later husband again, yet the sacred ashes follow him through homes, offices, and a second marriage until a final ironic scene reveals the urn hidden among festive flowers at a christening.
Two thousand attendees at a Democratic field day in Jefferson celebrate Gen John B Gordon’s arrival and a strong party turnout. A barbecue for veterans unfolds as Third party members fade, with Gordon delivering a one and a half hour speech amid lambs and pigs roasting. County voters back the Democrats by roughly 450 to 500 votes.
