The Maton Telegraph endorses Frank H. Colley as a strong candidate for Congress. Colley, born in Wilkes County, rose from farming to law, serving as a county representative and senator, acclaimed for energy, fairness, and devotion to farmers and the public.
The Youth's Companion awarded an American flag to Ben Hill Academy in Ben Hill Georgia for sending the best essay on the Arctic influence of the flag in public schools. Essays were submitted nationwide and reviewed by the commission before granting the flag to the school.

The Oglethorpe County desperado Hill Poldoe, famed for resisting arrest, was finally arrested by Clarke County Sheriff Weir after a dramatic confrontation at a plantation. Weir’s action, praised by locals, ended Poldoe’s years of evading law enforcement and brought him to Athens jail.
A Lehigh Valley engine exploded near Buffal deck junction killing engineer Pearl O Connor and fireman Henry J. O'Connor. The blast shredded the locomotive, tore rails from ties, and scattered debris over the Lake Shore tracks. Bodies found, injuries described in grisly detail as rescue teams searched the wreckage and nearby creeks.
Eliza Sage, wife of defendant John Sage, recounts the 1882 murder plan to dispose of her 23 year old son to enable marriage. She describes crossing fields to throw the child into a creek and Sage urging the act, as the trial for the alleged gender of Harry Cunningham continues in Manion Indiana.

In Rockingham County North Carolina Dayist Stokes a colored man was attacked by a cat in Clayville Virginia area. The enraged animal sprang at him and sank its teeth in his wrist. The cat held on until his hand was severed and he later died after collapsing and becoming sick.
Madison Ga May 12 A major city fire began in a small frame building housing a Negro run saloon after a defective flue. The fire spread to eight houses and threatened the eastern side until Mayor Butter sent aid from nearby towns. Losses totaled several thousand dollars with no insurants noted. Police heightened precautions as residents assessed the damage and potential outbreak.
An impartial report from Taurens and Laurens recounts G. F. Rich claiming Boston and Ashland Ohio as bases lecturing on Hap y Homes and Temperance. After pressure from locals a committee and later youths forced him from town, with threats to return to expose his stripes. He fled toward Atlanta after mischief in lectures.
On the Lingle farm a devoted goose pair killed a rat that had preyed on their goslings. The gander waited by a barn rat hole, struck the rat with a swift beak, then ducked it under a horse trough and held it under water until it drowned. The geese then scattered the rat remains and guided their goslings to the pond. New York Sun reports the tale as a curious act of poultry vengeance.
Atlanta May 13. D H a railway conductor was arrested for murder in the death of a young man named Tripp found beside the Suwanee railroad track. Witnesses say Tripp, from Greenville SC, tried to hop a freight where the conductor Lee worked. After being removed, Tripp vanished and was later found dead. The coroner’s jury issued a verdict for arrest.
John M. Winstead, intoxicated, demanded money at his wife’s restaurant in Ouray Col. He shot his wife through the heart in her presence, then killed himself with a second shot on the front steps. Both to be buried tomorrow at county expense. the couple’s property was squandered, and the husband is described as dissolute. The dead woman’s relatives are in Marshalltown Iowa and Hutchinson Kansas. the man was said to be from Tennessee.
Albany May 12 The 16 year old son of Dr and Mrs W W Bacon died this morning at about 6 oclock While playing barefoot he stepped on a splinter fear of his father lancet caused him to say nothing about the accident He grew worse and died despite physicians efforts The funeral was from their residence at corner Stateland Mon toe streets The sorrowful tale highlights a tragic accident and the death of a valued youth from Albany New York There is also note of a Kenmare New York woman Ms Cusack whose whereabouts are sought after various entertainments and reports in Pittsburg remain unsettled
Paris reports Josephine Hoegell, a woman, was sentenced to penal servitude for life for brutal abuse of her eight year old daughter. The child allegedly endured repeated kicks and blows, was tied, and left in a bed soaked with ice. The case highlights alleged severe mistreatment by the mother.
