Washington reports a Swiss dispatch claiming Berlin and Vienna agreed on a twenty five year alliance with stricter military obligations and economic cooperation to advance the mitteleuropa plan. Allied observers note no major German offensives renewed yet with steady artillery and limited ground gains as British troops hold salient.
Rev Stanley R Grubb of the First Christian church enlisted in Y M C A secretarial work and left yesterday for Greenville to begin duties at Camp Sevier. His congregation granted leave of absence and his uncle Rev Roberts will fill the pulpit in his absence after Grubb completed a special training course at Black Mountain.
Macon May 15 W M Durden president of the South Georgia Railroad died this morning at his home after a short illness. He led the company through expansion and modernization and was a prominent figure in state business circles. Durden survived by his wife and three children and will be buried in Macon with funeral arrangements to be announced.
Washington May 15 An amendment to the post office appropriation bill provides a 200 yearly raise for clerks and letter carriers with a 20 percent rise for rural carriers and workers earning under 209 annually. The measure was adopted by the Senate today.
Judge Andrew J. Cobb has accepted an invitation to deliver the principal address at a June 30 patriotic rally in Stephens County. The event draws broad county and state attendance with Governor and other prominent figures invited. Cobb, a sought after speaker, has additional engagements including Red Cross efforts in Americus and talks in Forsyth, Social Circle, Royston, and Cumming as schedules allow.
The general conference named six new Methodist bishops including Dr. John M. Moore and Dr. W. F. McMurry. Dr. A V W Darlington, Dr. F N Parker, Dr. H M Dubose, and Dr. W N Ainsworth received votes ranging from 159 to 183. Ainsworth was honored with a banquet by delegates from Georgia.
Gutzon Borglum sent a long letter to Senator Brandegee reiterating his denial of the charge that he sought to form a private airplane corporation to secure government contracts while investigating aircraft production at the invitation of President Wilson.
President Wilson declined to veto the draft bill shifting Army basis from state population to class 1 numbers. He stated in a letter to Senator Phelan that the interests of the country would be best served by the measure as it stands, despite objections to removing volunteer credits.
Aerial mail service in the United States became an accomplished fact with flights carrying mail from New York and Philadelphia to Washington and back. An Army piloted plane on the Washington to Philadelphia leg was forced to land thirty miles north due to a broken propeller. Flights are planned daily except Sunday.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on May 15 the thirty third session of the Southern Baptist Convention adopted a resolution calling for equal suffrage for women in church organizations.
In the Toul sector American aviators shot down three German planes. Five American pilots were decorated with the French war cross for their actions in the May 15 engagement with German forces.
Jefferson Georgia May 15 Hon A R Braselton of Pendergrass died this morning after paralysis from a stroke. A Jackson County leader, he served as sheriff about twenty years ago and as chairman of roads and revenue for several terms. He leaves a widow and several children. Funeral tomorrow at the Baptist church with burial in Pendergrass cemetery.
Washington May 15 Food Administrator Hoover asked the house appropriations committee today for 1 000 000 to provide offices and clerical help for 4 000 county food administrators. New York May 16 Plans had been made in 1914 for a German driven uprising in the United States if the U S entered the European war. Ivan Norodny, secretary of the Russia American Asiatic Corp., testified that Baron von Gersdorff, a former agent in Mexico, claimed German rifles had arrived and would be used to aid the W W and the rebels if conflict arose with the United States.
From across the state volunteers are arriving for intensive training at the State College of Agriculture. Men with carpentry and blacksmithing certificates, chosen by local boards, proceed to the college dormitories to begin work ahead of the summer term.
About 100 Woodmen of the World camps met at the Georgian hotel to plan a large Fourth of July ceremony in Athens. Estimates suggest 6,000 to 15,000 attendees from across Georgia, with 12,000 as a conservative figure. The event promises parades and unique ceremonies rivaling other secret orders. Local business leaders and the chamber of commerce pledged support to ensure a spectacular day.
Atlanta May 15 ruling from the U S food administrator mandates that after May 15 no manufacturer using sugar may purchase without an authorized sugar distribution certificate endorsed by the buyer. Certificates, obtainable from the federal food administrator, 414 Chamber of Commerce building, Atlanta, cover various denominations and require a sworn statement that purchases will not exceed the buyer’s fair share.

Paris May 15 M. Duval director of the Bonnete Rochte newspaper was condemned to death today by court martial for treason. Six other years Duval heard his sentence and then said posterity will judge whether I am guilty of treason.
Washington May 15 The hearing on the administration bill proposing extensive development of waterways for power and irrigation began today before the special house water power committee with Secretaries Baker and Houston urging changes and speedy enactment. Andrew M Soule Federal Food Administrator for Ga. lists sugar use limits for numerous industries and outlines exemptions and reporting requirements under the new rules.
In Washington May 15 Provident Wilbon named Charles Hughes to work with Attorney General Gregory on investigating criminal charges linked to war reductions. Hughes will review plans with the attorney general in a few days. The President also reiterated opposition to aviation and other war prep measures, calling the Senate resolution a vote of condolence and a bid to take over war conduct.
Mr E R Hodgson Jr sails to England to devote himself to YMCA service. He suspends local business interests and will fund his own travel while joining the Y work abroad.
