Two Athens men, Charles H. Phinizy and Frank A. Lipscomb, plan to establish a new telephone exchange here. They will seek city franchises to lay lines and offer business phones at 30 dollars and residential phones at 18 dollars, promising lower rates and improved service, potentially sparking competition with Southern Bell, which has 228 subscribers.
Richmond chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy selects and approves a design by Zolvey New York for an Italian marble sitting angel statue over Miss Winnie Davis grave in Hollywood. Mrs Davis expresses happiness at the decision after a late meeting March 9.
The War Department starts recruiting for an enlarged regular army of 65 000, expanding stations from about 40 to 70 80, with main hubs in Chicago New York and Philadelphia and new posts in Augusta Anniston Albany Chickamauga Park Macon Savannah Hartford Harrisburg Raleigh Columbus and others. Recruits will initially serve in the Philippines joining six infantry regiments and Sixth Artillery to reinforce General Otis at Manila when transport is arranged.

He says about 20 000 destitute residents in Havana and suburbs rely on rations and face starvation unless help is found. Mrs. M. H. Shepard passed away after a brief illness with pneumonia at her brother’s home in Walton County. She was wife of M. H. Shepard and mother of Walter Shepard, leaving a husband and seven children. She belonged to the Methodist church and was highly regarded. Funeral services were held at Center Hill, Walton County, with interment following.
Comer Ga March 9 David Scarbrough and Calvin Freeman two young men were killed by an engine explosion at a local shingle mill. One man was badly crippled and Freeman was blown to pieces with his heart not found. DeWitt's Witch Hazel Saive Cor Dilfer Scaida Borns.
