Hon Sam L Olive of Augusta was elected by acclamation president of the Georgia senate. A frequent Athens visitor, he spoke eloquently during the Flag Day celebration, earning further distinction. He is hailed as a son of old Georgia.
Brazil revokes neutrality orders and aligns morally with the United States and Entente amid World War I. No formal entry announced. Lens fall accelerates as Canadian assaults tighten, German bombardments hit Belgian lines, and new German submarine features surface. Submarine nets cut devices, a German wireless station is found near Arendal, and a Danish steamer Ivigtut sinking is reported. An American airman Hall is believed dead then alive after a lung wound in combat. Cotton imports to England fall as mills face shortages and import steps rise. Scheidemann notes German autocracy hinders peace in international reform talks.
Clarke county is represented among the American forces in France with several fathers reporting sons landed this week. An Athens citizen believes two of his sons with the signal corps are in France, while another Clarke county father has a son among the contingent.
Col J E Gordon from Danielsville came to the city yesterday for undisclosed reasons and likelihood of routine business. The visit was brief with no public events reported.
Georgia trustees seek to take over Lucy Cobb Institute at Athens to offer female students equal opportunities in higher education. Measure supported by Brown and DuBose would establish a state branch of the University of Georgia for women, backed by Athens and state groups, with the institute donated free of encumbrances.
Mr. Robert Griffith, second son of Mr. Arthur E. Griffith of Athens, left yesterday for Columbus Ohio to begin work in the United States army aviation school. He was accepted after a strict exam and ordered to report to the training school to join American airmen in France.
Stockholm reports tire prices range from $500 to $600 as a local price trend. Mr. James Ray of Monroe is expected to arrive today, signaling possible market movement for auto tires.
John N Holder of Jackson county won the Georgia house speaker seat on the first ballot after W H Burwell withdrew. He defeated Nathan F Culpepper of Meriwether county by 105 to 78. Burwell’s 4th ballot votes favored both opponents. Burwell voted for Culpepper.
A special meeting of the mayor and council is called for this evening at 8:30 in the council room City Hall. Mayor R O Arnold is away in Atlanta on business, with Mayor Pro Tem O R Dobbs to preside for the first time since his January election.
Guidance urges ready canning and storage of surplus produce. Use glass or stoneware for home canning, reserve tight containers, and seal jars with cork or paraffin. Concentrate soups, dry vegetables, pickle in crocks, and store beans and root crops for winter. Do not leave containers empty in the community next fall.
Southern Bell Telephone company donated 500 dollars via manager J. W. Jarrell as part of a regional Red Cross drive. The national total reached 500000 with 36500 allocated to the southern group and 17500 from Southern Bell and Cumberland Telephone companies. Athens received 500 of the southern grant.
Atlanta June 28 E B Moore of Fulton was elected clerk of the house Brown and DuBose are prominent. Brown returns from last term DuBose after a senate stint and rest.
Emp Peacock, president pro tempore in Athens, emerges as the youngest Georgia senate member to occupy the second in command role. A Georgia graduate and former Red and Black football captain now serves as assistant coach, having quickly risen after election to the senate.
Washington reports a 1 to 5 per ton cut in coal prices east of the Mississippi to take effect July 1, reducing mine prices and altering government revenue. Consumers will pay mine price plus transport, with commissions capped at 25 cents per ton for middlemen. New York notes a navy coal bid 2 cents under 30 a ton to avoid collusion, amid trial disclosures.
Alfredo Cocchi, wanted in New York for Ruth Kruger’s murder, is held incommunicado in a Bologna jail while Judge Zucconi interrogates him. Cocchi’s attorney cannot speak with him. Miss Mary Lovell McElmurray of Waynesboro arrived for a visit to Miss Mary Pease, schoolmates of Lucy Cobb Institute, a Columbus legacy noted by the Ledger.
The Clarke county exemption board for the selective draft act was named yesterday. Sheriff Walter E B Jackson Clerk Elmer J Crawford of the superior and city courts and Dr. H B Smith the county physician will pass on exemptions in Clarke county. Governor named them. appointments approved by the president.
One day next week a meeting will be announced to organize a branch of the National League for Women's Service in the city. Mrs. W L Peel of Atlanta is state chairman, Mrs. W E Shepherd of Madison district chairman, and Mrs. John T Ander son of this city local chairman. The league will outline wartime service aims and scope of work in the Banner next Sunday.
Do not keep an empty jar. Use regular tight sealing containers for canning. Concentrate foods so each jar holds maximum food and minimum water. Put up jams jellies and preserves in widewashed jars sealed with paper and paraffin. Pack fruit juices in ordinary bottles. Don’t can perishable items. Grow cabbage potatoes and root crops in your garden.
