Trustees of the University of Georgia confer the Doctor of Laws on Mr George Peabody. The audience cheered as Chancellor Narrow announced the degree, praising Peabody as a cultured scholar and loyal friend of Athens and Georgia.
Speaker Warner Hill, Georgia railroad commissioner, declares patience ended and denounces Hoke Smith for false insinuations of railroad influence. He asserts impartiality on cases involving railroads, cites rate reductions, and attacks Smith for political manipulation and slander aimed at securing the governor’s nomination.
The one hundred and fifth Georgia commencement ended as diplomas were handed to graduates in arts, sciences, and law. Notable speakers included Mr. George Whitman and Mr. Jesse Cates. prizes were awarded for essays and scholastic achievements across multiple fields.
An Athens citizen, Guy T Bernard, son of Athens, was present at commencement events where Prof Barrow was named university chancellor. Bernard recently completed three years at Augusta Medical College and plans one more year there before earning his degree while holding a remunerative position at Augusta City Hospital.
