June 17 report from Monticeo Florida states Deputy Sheriff Henry Dawkins was shot and killed near the Georgia line in northern Jefferson county. Simpson Williams, an escaped Georgia convict, is named as the assailant. Sheriff Kilpatrick and Dawkins confronted him at a cabin commissary. A voice invited entry. Dawkins entered with a lantern and Williams opened fire, killing Dawkins. A reward of 240 dollars was posted for Williams.
